Touhou Project

Are there any Touhou fans here?

If you don't know, it's a popular series of shooting games. Some info about them:

I wouldn't call myself a fan, since i never played the games...
I am however familiar with it to a certain degree, i like quite a bunch of teh characters...

And i am also a crazy fan of IOSYS who often base their flash videos of Touhou Characters...
Just postnig to let you know that i at least am familiar with it, more or less...

I think I'm pretty much in the same boat as Micki! when it comes to Touhou..

"Avast Ye! HOIST THEM SAILS! Let us be freebooters o' Touhou this day! ARR....!!"  ...... *ahem* ...
..
... sorry.. Don't know what got into me there. :e_tongue:

The only character I'm most familiar with is Reisen, the bunny-earred girl with eyes that apparently can make people insane. She sometimes gestures her hand to look like a handgun.

My fav IOSYS song: Marisa Stole The Precious Thing

Lately it seems everyone is going crazy over a new Touhou vid which feature the characters as siluettes. It really is incredible to watch. Very fluid, amazing quality. Here's a link with translated lyrics..
Bad Apple!!

I've also noted that a few of the characters are being released as those poseable Figma figures. Look good too.

So yeah... that's the extent of my knowledge of Touhou. haha

Yeah, isn't it though? Think my bottom jaw hit the floor after first seeing it.

That fluid animation is just so.... wow.

I've never heard of it! Is this a Japan-exclusive game?

It sort of reminds me of Death Smiles; I really wish that game would be brought over.

Tried one of the games... Not really a fan of the art-style or the characters, to be honest. The gameplay is like a super-hardcore version of Galaga with millions of difficult to dodge shots flying every which way around you. There's a reason why they call it Bullet Hell, I suppose.

It's pretty fun, but not exceptionally so, in my opinion. Definitely worth playing if you like old-school top-down shooters, though.

When it comes to videos, I like the ones made by kamS. They are the only ones I can watch over and over.

Yeah, they are doujin soft games made by one person, but they were translated by fans.

If you want to try them, I suggest starting with the 6th game, The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, and then moving up from there.

Any particular reason why it's best to start from the 6th one? Like, are the first five not as good?

I played Imperishable Night. Which one is that?
EDIT: Checked the Wiki, it's the 8th one. But my first question still stands, in case I ever decide to play these games with the English patch(es).
EDIT 2: Will there ever be English patches for games 2-5?

It teaches you to not rely on bombing, and it teaches you to be aware of where your hitbox is without seeing it. This will make the games after EoSD much easier. Plus, it's the first Windows game, so the story will make more sense if you start with this one and move up from there.

Like, are the first five not as good?

Well, they are for PC-98. They aren't as good as the Windows games, but still fun. The characters in the PC-98 games (besides Reimu, Marisa, Alice, and Yuka) don't reappear in the Windows games though, that's why playing the first 5 games before the 6th isn't all that necessary.

Will there ever be English patches for games 2-5?

Dunno, but you can find the scripts for them on the wiki.

Actually, the ones I have came with english patches.  I'm sure you could find them easy enough.
