Oddly enough, I was thinking of Excel Saga the other day, and realized that in my head, Sumiyoshi has a voice.  Scratchy, sort of deep, but nasal.

Anyone else have a clear voice in their head for Sumiyoshi?  Just curious.

I always figured he might be a whisperer. Kinda like mumbling, but not really. The strong dialect in his speech may have a lot to do with it.

Either that, or he speaks telepathically.... which is a VERY strange thought. lol!

MincyMatsu

I imagine it like a middle-deep voice, with an accent...

even though this might be to do with the manga but I think of him speaking with a strong glaswegian accent (sort of like Billy Connelly)

No, Sumiyoshi does not have a voice, he has lines, lines of text, even in the manga and if people want to talk with him they have to read it... simple as that.

Simply put and straight to the point.
I like it!!

If he had an actual voice, I'd picture it pretty deep...but he also has an accent, and I'm having a hard time compiling the two.  Also the actual accent I'm not sure about.  Southern + Deep doesn't sound right to me, maybe a brooklyn accent?

He's got a Newcastle accent, according to the manga. Just as clear, though :D

ElricJC

Yeah, I hear the Newcastle accent in my head, but not with a terribly deep voice, just a normal tenor with that accent, but I have imagined it slightly nasally.

Sumiyoshi is from Okayama. The most famous Japanese accent is Kansai-ben, which people from Osaka (such as in Azumanga Daioh and Abenobashi) speak, but there are several other accents as well in Japan, including Okayama and Tohoku (a more "country" accent). Even though Japan isn't a very big country, it's kept a lot of different accents, just as England has. Interestingly, there's a Fukuoka accent as well, but it's almost never used in Excel Saga--the characters tend to speak "normal" (i.e., educated Tokyo) Japanese.

MincyMatsu

Apart from his dialect though, how would you imagine his voice to sound like, i mean, if there was actually a sound..? Like deep, grumpy, young guy, typical grown man...

Lord Il

hmm... Sumiyoshi doesn't strike me as being "young".

In fact, his character could be seen (by me!) as possibly being someone in his late twenties.
Don' believe he'd 'ave muchuva young-ish voice, ah'd reckin.

FullmetalExcel
