a Little Leicestershire Legend

Up on the Dane Hills lives
Black Annis, an old blue faced
woman with one eye.  Her home is the cave she dug out of the sandstone with her long, sharp nails. 
She waits in the woods on the hills to pounce on unsuspecting children and carry them back to her cave. Once she has them there they are doomed.  She drinks their blood and eats their flesh and hangs their skins out to dry on the branches of the oak tree outside the entrance.  When the skins of her human prey are dry she sews them together to make her skirts.

Stories of Black Annis, the bogeywoman of Leicester, were told to local children for hundreds of years and were still being told as late as the 1940s, even though the cave was finally covered up when the Dane Hills housing estate was built in the west of the city just after the first world war.  Her cave led to a tunnel that ran all the way to Leicester Castle where she waits to this day as a ghost in the Castle Gateway!

also in my line of work we visit location that have ghosts. the following accounts are in Hinckley Leicestershire

1. in the town centre is the Edwards Centre, former factory turned into shops. the bins for these shops is kept in an alleyway round the back with the only entrance being caged and padlocked. This alleyway is haunted by a shadow who walks up and down it.

2. Hinckley Hospital is an old building. some of the wards are closed to the public now. in the early hours if faceing the bin paddock the window 2nd from the end there is a figure looking out the window (sometimes pulling a curtain out the way) the ward has been closed to paitiants since the 50's

3. up a street called church walk we have to reverse into a yard. sometimes we will get pelted by stones from the graveyard opposite. no-one is in the graveyard at that time in the morning. The church it self is haunted by a monk who walks along the knave http://www.lrfhs.net/church/Hinckley.jpg

4 The college below used to be a workhouse (horible place read Oliver Twist) the window on the end left there normally stands a figure looking out the window (and at 4:30 in the morning I don't think it's a student or caretaker and the college doesn't employ nightwatchmen)



5. Elmesthorpe church (near where I live) it might look run down but it still in use. an armoured figure at around the time of richard the 3rd (his generals supposedly spent the night here befor the battle at bosworth) is seen walking around the graveyard

Are these wards (specifically the window 2nd from the end) closed off on purpose because of known hauntings? Seems a shame that they'd be closed to the public. O.o
