Anime / Anime/Manga merchandise - Where/How to purchase
« on: July 29, 2012, 04:33:53 PM »
Until the latter part of last year I used to rely on buying Anime/Manga merchandise online through eBay. It was a source which proved convenient and reliable for me with being able to use PayPal to make safe payments. However, it goes without saying that most prices for such things on eBay are jacked up to the extreme because the sellers are obviously trying to get the highest profits they can get for... "rare" items. It was only by being ridiculously lucky have I been able to score a good deal on a few auctions. Not only can high prices be a problem, but you also have to be extremely careful of counterfeit goods. So I found myself saying, "There's got to be a better way to do this!"

So.. My newest prefered way to shop is through AmiAmi. Their prices seem remarkably low when compared to other online retailers. Just be very certain to get any pre-orders done for things you want as they can sell out very quickly! They provide good options for shipping methods to accommodate your budget as well. Service is very prompt and organised. I have nothing but good things to say about them. :ehail:

Where do you do your shopping (online or otherwise) for figures, t-shirts, garage kits, etc, etc?
Where do you get the best prices and service?

What shipping methods do you prefer (EMS = fast) (SAL = slow). Do you prefer having insurance on your purchases to protect from loss/damage.
In your experience, any truth that using a cheaper shipping method can help avoid having to pay import taxes/duties?

Anime / Binbougami Ga!
« on: July 23, 2012, 06:21:07 PM »
Binbougami Ga!
I like a weird and random series once in a while and Binbougami Ga! is a series which recently grabbed my attention for such reasons. It's also littered with parodies everywhere. But at the same time it does indeed have a plot to it all.

Ichiko Sakura is a sixteen year old girl who seems to have it all.. wealth, beauty, brains and happiness. And with this she has unusually high amounts of good fortune. In fact, she is inadvertently pulling away all the good fortune from everyone else around her. This creates a large and potentially dangerous imbalance of fortune between herself and the world around her.

Momiji, a poverty god in the Realm of Misfortune, is dispatched to correct the situation by any means necessary to restore balance. Her right arm is wrapped because it's extremely dangerous to anyone when exposed (the reason for this hasn't yet been explained fully). Many times she is seen with a giant syringe which is used to extract Ichiko's good fortune in order to give it back to others. Momiji easily steals the show with her energetic randomness and the funny confrontations she has with Ichiko.

And as I've said, parodies run amuck in this series. I've seen stuff from To Love-Ru, Pokemon, Rosario+Vampire, Doraemon, Lupin The Third, Dragon Ball Z, Naruto............. That's just the ones from the top of my head and actually knew of! :il_hahaha: Some parodies seem a bit forced at times, but it doesn't bother me too much. I've been having fun watching this.

Interesting to note that Funimation already has mention of this series on their site as "Coming Soon" and is streaming subbed episodes as they become available..

Babble / Toyota uses Hatsune Miku to sell cars in USA
« on: May 06, 2011, 07:55:47 PM »
I could barely believe it after hearing of this today.

In a bold (if not strangely unexpected) move to market their vehicles, Hatsune Miku has been adopted by Toyota to sell the Corolla line in the US of A. Don't believe it? Check this out..!

Just how effective a Japan virtual idol would be to sell cars in other parts of the world remains to be seen. But is this a sign of the times? Has Miku really gained enough international appeal in order to be used to help sell Japan products?

Games / PlayStation Network breached
« on: April 26, 2011, 08:00:12 PM »
After close to a week, Sony finally comes clean (albeit too late, IMO). All your personal information may've been compromised.

Don't wait to find out for yourself! Err on the side of caution - Alert your credit card company immediately to freeze the card you have used @PSN.

What the folks at IGN are saying about it..

General / Invader ZIM fans take note..
« on: March 28, 2011, 07:13:49 PM »
I'm a bit late but thought I'd give attention to this for those interested.

Nickelodeon, feeling the pressure of thousands of rabid fans, has opted for a chance to bring Invader ZIM back to continue his invasion of earth with all new episodes. A new DVD, Operation DOOM, was released last February which is a compilation of some of the past highest rated episodes. Should this DVD sell very well, this could mean the previously scripted but unreleased episodes could finally become animated.

Already own all the previous DVDs? No problem! Corrupting your friends and relatives minds will be easy by buying them a copy of Operation DOOM - They'll be imitating GIR and making people go crazy in no time..! :eevil: "Hi, floor! Make me a sammich!"

----
2011 marks the 10th anniversary of Invader ZIM. To mark this milestone, a convention, InvaderCON, was held this past weekend in Atlanta, Georgia. Undoubtedly the greatest highlight had to be the original cast reading scripts from unreleased episodes. Here's one of them..
"Day of da Spookies" (Caution: 20+ minute vid!) Not taking away from the rest, but Richard Horvitz (ZIM) easily stole the spotlight.

General / Sucker Punch
« on: March 27, 2011, 01:41:38 PM »
I saw Sucker Punch yesterday despite the negative reviews.
Words of advice: Pay no attention to these negative reviews you see. So far this movie has been ridiculously underrated.

Approach this movie with an open mind and throw normalcy right out the window. If you can do that, you will love the ride this movie will take you on! :e_cool:

Miscellaneous / Otaku USA gives us mention!
« on: March 12, 2011, 05:18:52 PM »
Just wanted to give a shout out to reviewer Erin Finnegan for giving us a plug in the April issue of Otaku USA magazine! :ehail: (Evangelion 2.0 on the cover) There was a fantastic article written by Erin about FUNimation's re-release of the Excel Saga anime.

But did Erin stop there? No way! She also dedicated a section to the manga itself where it all began, baby. She interviewed Carl Horn to talk about the similarities as well as the sharp differences between the ES manga and anime. It was made clear that the anime and the manga are indeed separate entities and should be both checked out and enjoyed for their distinctive differences.
Good stuff, Carl! :ehail:
We will indeed do what we can to ensure new readers of Excel Saga can get the volumes they need.

Babble / Japan earthquake
« on: March 11, 2011, 05:00:25 PM »
I got home from work a few hours ago to finally see footage of happened with the recent Japan earthquake. It's gut wrenching. I imagine what it would be like to be in the path of that oncoming wall of water and feel nothing but utter helplessness. Nature can be a powerful and unforgiving obstacle for us when it comes to our survival. We often take it for granted on just how delicate life can be.

My sincere condolences to these people to have experienced such a horrific tragedy. There are no words to describe such devastation.
Think I'll be making a donation to the Red Cross shortly as it's just the right thing to do.

Anime / Fansubs/Scanlations: The Debate
« on: August 03, 2010, 05:12:39 PM »
It's think it's time for a good ol' fashioned debate; A topic which always garners much talk in anime/manga forums.

I'll keep this topic fairly broad to start. Anyone can state and elaborate their views on this as much or as little as they see fit. A poll is included for the curious. I just ask that we keep this civil.... No picking up and throwing chairs at people. Furniture is expensive!
(You know what I mean, right?)  :e_wink:

Topic: Fansubs/Scanlations
Are you for or against them?

What they are in a nutshell..

Fansubs - Anime episodes/movies recorded from sources such as television, internet broadcast, or DVD/Blu-ray rips which are translated and edited from one language to another by fansub groups. Distribution is primarily done via the interenet.

Scanlations - Scanned manga pages (sometimes pages are individually removed from the book) which are translated and edited from one language to different languages by scanlation groups. Distribution is usually done via the interenet.

Manga / Nick Simmons' comic book copying Bleach manga
« on: February 25, 2010, 02:48:52 PM »
It seems that Nick Simmons has recently landed himself in hot water with plagiarism..

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-02-25/nick-simmons-incarnate-halted-over-alleged-bleach-plagiarism

Comparing the manga shots of Bleach and "his" work, it would seem blatantly obvious.

VIZ Media is certainly going to call him out on this.

EDIT: From Radical Publishers, here's a page showcasing his comic, Incarnate. If you look at the preview you'll also notice that Bleach may not have been his only influence.... My god... looky at that..! O_O Alucard from Hellsing is in his comic too. Ouch. How's Nick going to get out of this one. :il_hahaha:

Nick's deviantArt page found here..
Appears to be a feeding frenzy on his comments page.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a reputable seller to buy a new PS2 laser lens from. The required laser lens is a KHS-400B for model number SCPH-30001. I've combed the pages of ebay and I'm not sure what to think. I don't want a refurbished unit nor do I want something from a third party manufacturer with questionable quality.

I'm doing the repair myself to save money as it's a fairly straightforward fix. My concern is just getting a new and correct replacement part for a fair price (Prices seem to average around 30 bucks).

Anime / Dragonball Evolution
« on: April 09, 2009, 04:57:59 PM »

http://www.dragonballthemovie.com/

oooo.... With Evolution in the title, it has to be good, right?

.....

Right..?

..... Well?

Hmm? I can't hear you over the deafening sound of crickets. :il_hahaha:

I thought instantly after first hearing of a live action Dragonball movie last year that it had to be an instant fail. Thing is though, it's generated a huge buzz of interest among otaku purists who grew up with it. I've talked with some of these people whose first dive into those enticing waters of anime has been the title of Dragonball/Dragonball Z. And yes, they actually will admit to it!  :il_hahaha: Wow..

As much as this movie has been dissed even before its release, it's significant in that it's bringing back an old childhood favorite to many. And because of that, I believe Evolution will do reasonably well at the box office despite any flaws it could have.

But if anything does comes out of this it'll certainly be a renewed interest in Akira Toriyama's creation in general. The demand for the anime DVDs will suddenly surge.
Hell, those horrible, constipated-sounding power-ups might be fun to see again, right? :e_tongue:

So, who's going to see it?

Music / Australian Pink Floyd Show
« on: January 30, 2009, 05:43:05 PM »
Anyone have the opportunity to see them?

Just before X-mas they came to Halifax and put on an amazing show - Made me realize that tribute bands can really be that damn good.  I've been a Fan of Floyd as long as I can remember, so this was gonna be the closest thing I'd likely ever see of an actual live Pink Floyd show. This show consisted of the entire "The Wall" album with animated CGI on the backdrop, laser light show, and a giant inflatable demon pig... no, I'm not kidding about the pig.

There was also an encore with other songs like Time, Wish You Were Here, and The Great Gig In The Sky.
With The Great Gig In The Sky, it was obvious the poor girl on vocal was out of breath towards the end of the song, but it was more than forgivable! She was given a standing ovation from everyone in the building. An amazing voice that felt like it went through you (in a good way, of course!)

Here's one the better quality sounding vids I pulled from YouTube. One of my fav songs too..
Comfortably Numb

So yeah, if you're a fan of Floyd and these guys come to your area to play, go see 'em.
Heck, the good thing about tribute bands like these, as opposed to the real thing, are the lower ticket prices. :il_hahaha:
