A manga news site just reported that the band around the 26th volume of Excel Saga says that the 27th and final volume will ship this summer, meaning it's going to end in 2-3 months in YKO.
I'm not all too surprised, but still... the end of an era! 15 years! Excel, we salute you!
(Source: http://www.manga-news.com/index.php/actus/2011/03/03/Excel-Saga-se-termine)
I'm not too surprised, I know we still have 6 English ones left to go, I'm glad that the series will get true closure, and I'm happy that Rikudou will finally be able to move on with his life and try out new things, but this still makes me kind of sad. Really sad, in fact. I mean, every good story needs to end and deserves to end, but I wish it wouldn't. Perhaps he'll do some (clean) doujins or special chapters in the future to continue the madness, if only briefly. But probably not.
I love how it's ending at 27 volumes, though. Seems sort of like an in-joke; an "I can one-up the anime version one last time!" statement, in a way.
^Ditto!
time to end this. 'S been fun, but I like to know something will end. You can move on then. Besides, what with all the slow releases, we'll be at this for 4-5 years.
Now that the manga is almost over, maybe we can finally get a proper Excel Saga anime adaptation.
I'm surprised, because I've been following along with the Japanese version and I have no idea how on earth he could actually wrap this mess of a plot up in 2-3 more chapters.
I'm trying to find a source on this in Japanese, and I'll comb through the latest chapter of YKO when I'm a little more awake, but for now I'm cautiously skeptical.

Some of us might be willing to give up a limb (or three) to see this happen. :e_tongue:
At least if the source material were finished, an anime adaption might be a little easier to put into production.

Much appreciated. More of a first-hand source would be preferable.

Some manga do excessively long final chapters. That could be the case here.
Alternatively, the wrap-around could have been misleading: this might be the end of "Excel Saga," but the story may continue under a different name (ex: Trigun --> Trigun Maximum / Deadpool --> Agent X).

Lookit all that feckin' Kanji. No way in hell I could read that. :sumysad:
Anyone care to translate it? Might offer a clue as to whether or not it'll be done for good in volume 27...
Well, beats my old guess of Vol. 25, and it does seem ironic that Rikudo-san ends the series one volume more than the anime had episodes. And since we are getting a per-annum release, anyway, we won't see vol. 27 for probably the aforementioned 4-5 years. But it needed to come to an end eventually, and I hate any story that drags on unnecessarily. Or fills an entire volume with pointless crap (Berserk, I'm looking at you :/)
Well I'll be damned. The Japanese confirms it.
Well... crap.
But hey, I'm hoping to get my EXCEL BEFRIENDS UMI AGAIN AND ILL PALAZZO DIES end! : D
Eventually...
I want to know what happened to real Miwa goddammit, at least.
Maybe now that its officially coming to an end we may get the final volumes at a faster rate or am I just dreaming? lol.
Anyway on one hand its sad to see Excel Saga come to an end (unless it continues in a different for I guess) but by god what a grand journey it has been and I have no regrets :ehail:
A world with no new volumes to look forward to? This is depressing news to me but of course nothing lasts forever. :e_crying: Would be nice if a spin-off series or a story related series like Foggle mentioned would come about after Excel Saga's end.
And we now have confirmation that it will be September's YKO which has the final chapter. (The source being August's YKO.)

Hi everyone I am new here... To be frank the news of the end of the manga is the reason I am here. I have been reading this manga for years, watched the anime over and over for many times, Excel Saga has accompanied me through out many bitter and sweet times. Now with the new of the manga is about to end, I am really sad.
There are many reasons for mangas to end...One is because the story ends naturally, another is because of unpopularity or other complexities so the author just wraps up the story quickly. Mangas ending due to the second reason can be easily identified from the plot. I really hope the author is not ending excel saga because he is starting to draw the new manga. And I really hope there can be an Excel Saga 2.
I even have the urge to write to Rikido to show my support for Excel Saga...but I can't write Japanese. What do you think?
^Welcome to the Excel Saga Forum, YouXiu. Happy to have you join us! ^^
I'm sure there are many of us who feel as you do when a favorite series ends such as Excel Saga. I've been an avid fan of ES for close to 10 years - from the anime to the manga. It seems too surreal to me for the manga to finally wrap up. :e_crying: But.. all good things must come to an end at some point. I just wish for the characters to not be shelved forever.
We've had someone from here write to Shinichi Watanabe (aka: Nabashin) and got back a great and fun reply from him. Rikdou has also been emailed, but unfortunately I don't think a reponse ever happened. This is not to say it isn't a good idea, though! :ehail: It would be great to write him, but it might be better to enlist the help of someone who is fluent in Japanese. Online translation services (Babelfish) are still not very reliable and not recommended.
Thank you Lord Il, this is a great forum! May I ask what was the mail to Nabeshin about? Is it also about the end of the manga?
Nabeshin is a very talented director but I think he has nothing to do with the manga, if we want to ask about the manga... I sometimes even suspect if Rikudo is really in good terms with Nabeshin. The anime emphasize on comedy but the manga has more depth. In the manga, the jokes and satires are hidden behind the surface of the plot and the readers often need to think about what message Rikudo is trying to deliver. Nabeshin kinda made a slapstick comedy show out of Excel Saga, in other words, Nabeshin changed Rikudo's work entirely (I am not saying the anime is not good though, it is brilliant, but in a way different from what the author intended Excel Saga to be).
Quote from: YouXiu on July 14, 2011, 12:11:18 PMMay I ask what was the mail to Nabeshin about? Is it also about the end of the manga?
I believe it was Turbam!!! (http://www.excelsagaforum.com/index.php?action=profile;u=777) who saw him at an anime convention a few years ago and felt inspired to write him about his general thoughts on Excel Saga. And no, it wasn't specifically about the manga, but more about whether or not an Excel Saga anime remake (moreso based on the manga) could be a possibility. Sadly, I think the thread which contained the posted email was eaten by wolves - I can't find it. :e_crying:

I agree completely with everything you've outlined here. :e_wink:
As I've always said, the anime of Excel Saga was pretty much Nabeshin's baby. It's the added depth which only the manga can provide is what makes Excel Saga truly shine as a series.
Welcome to the forum, YouXiu!
Something important to remember is that the anime was made around the time volume 5 of the manga came out. It wasn't really until the 8th or 9th book that it started going deeper with the plot, character development, and overall message.
While the anime certainly features a different style of comedy, I feel as if Nabeshin simply made the humor of the first volumes more palatable for general anime-viewing audiences. I do not mean to speak ill of Asian culture or taste, but it is quite rare to see the kind of subtlety and wit present in Rikdo's Excel Saga in an eastern comedic work, and I do not believe the anime would have proven successful had it stuck to the style of the original manga. Its cleverness is both its greatest strength and its downfall, unfortunately.
Fresh meat mwahuhahahaahaha!*cough*cough*
:hdead:
ahem. Welcome to the forum newcomer.
About your views on the anime, I don't really think Rikdo disliked Nabeshin particularly. Rikdo asked for the anime to take a different route from the manga. The only thing I heard was that Rikdo was disturbed when he heard Excel's voice. He said that he really didn't have an idea of what her voice should sound like.
But this is mostly hearsay as we don't hear much about Rikdo's viewpoints. He's never been at a con (I think), so most of what we know is based on what he says in the manga.

He was at a couple around the time the anime was first released overseas... which means that few outside Japan had actually read the manga, and no one really asked him about the differences. :hdead:
Thank you everyone for the warm welcome! :elhail: The difference between the anime and the manga is not my concern lol. Both are great. It is the end of the manga that bugs me. No more Excel action! That is very bad! :lordil:

Any awesome translators out there? :)
I skimmed that, but it's actually not all that interesting or enlightening.
For example, on the "Excel" page he's actually talking about how embarrassingly outdated some of the jokes from the early volumes are.
So has anyone actually read the final chapter now that it's out in Japan?
I've read or skimmed the remainder of the series. Did you have a question or something? You can PM me with it.

I was just wondering if anyone here had had the pleasure of reading it.
Have you read Rikdo's other works? Are they good?
I've checked out a few pages from the final chapter (the ones that are in color). Kind of wish I hadn't due to spoilers, but they looked good and I know we won't get to see 'em like that in the English release.

Anyone know how to score a copy? I did a quick eBay check for Young King Ours and got nothing.

I have a copy. I ordered it from Amazon.jp before it came out, I imagine it's not available there now. You might try Akadot, they get a lot of manga magazines.

Keep your copies of September's Young King Ours if you have them - Rikdo reworked the ending chapter for the 27th tankobon.
Less chaotic, more sentimental, IMO. Adds the Leiji Matsumoto Parody characters for a brief cameo, gives Watanabe a much happier ending, and has a "I drew this for you, Uncreativity" final page. And no, the volume does not include either of the 'hot spring' epilogues.
But yes, it still has that Shiouji ending. WTF.
Holy poop on a post! Glad I bought the magazine. :elhail:
No heavy spoilers please, but... how different are we talking here? Like, is nothing the same (not even the art), or were just a few scenes changed into something else? Oh yeah, and which ending is better/more satisfying/more fitting/whatever?
Most of it is roughly the same, up until Kabapu and Momochi's 'epilogue' scene'. It them gives Watanabe, Elgala and Hyatt a rewrite, and adds Mr. Owner and Ms. Manager in a cameo. It also adds a scene with Excel, Il Palazzo and Tenmangu (I think, don't read Japanese, so going by pictures.) Then we get Shiouji and Umi's scene as it was in the magazine, only Menchi is now with Umi. The final shot is what you see in Uncreativity's post above - the last "Excel Saga... in... SPAAAAACE!" scene is totally gone.
The final shot is what you see in Uncreativity's post above - the last "Excel Saga... in... SPAAAAACE!" scene is totally gone.

http://blog.goo.ne.jp/orochima/e/627408580ce0b268090a6e249f0d96f0
I found this thing which claims to be a RAR of Excel Saga 27, but it's password protected.
What do you guys say?
Strange... Can't find anything about a password anywhere on his blog. The file size definitely makes it look legit.
I'm stumped myself. It doesn't seem to be the blog url (with or without http://). ???
Are you guys looking into it?
I also downloaded a 400mb Holy Brownie one, and it's passworded too.
The more I compare the volume 27 tankobon to the original YKO scans, the more dialogue discrepancies I find, not just in the final chapter, but in the entire volume. Some of them are pretty significant, too, like:
In the original version, the proto-Il Palazzo and Excel cores are referred to as Arc and Accord, respectively.
The original line is, "Arc... it's me, Accord."
The new one is, "Pio... it's me."
Do you see where it's going here? The original Excel and Il Palazzo... were actually Fio and Piora. From Holy Brownie. Some of the extra pages visually confirm it as well.
At the moment I read that, I think I must have looked like this: (http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc496/echo_es/picard-facepalm-o.gif)

I can't wait for Carl's endnote on that one. >_>

I see people aren't worrying about the download I posted..
I don't have either the YKO with the final chapter in it, or the 27th volume.
Can someone help me out?
Like I said, I haven't been able to figure out the password. The reason why I know what happens in volume 27 is because I actually purchased a physical copy.

Excel Saga fan, which do you choose?
The bittersweet ending (magazine) or the brainfuck ending (tankobon)?
That's the drill... -_-U
Rikudo, you're an ass :p
Has anyone actually read Holy Brownie?
yep its about 2 time travelling pixies trying to solve certain problems. Its full of sex and violence and is funny lmao
It's not in English anywhere though no?
It hasn't been scanlated that I know of, no. And is far too explicit for Viz to realistically pick up, even if it did have a chance of selling. Which it does not.
At one time we did have a scanlation group for Holy Brownie here. I think it was fronted by E-E. I can't remember how far they got with it.
But that was a long time ago.

Correct. The one in the magazine was less sappy and more silly.
I can't read Japanese, and I don't know what happens until the end, and even though it was a spoiler for me, I couldn't help but look at that ending.
And I didn't think too much of it the first time I looked, but when I looked again today it made me feel a bit emotional, I'd really love to be able to read the whole thing properly.
I found this is the final page in Holy Brownie, and luckily they wrote it in English, read what it says and comments?

Rikdo is seriously a crazy guy. At least there's a happy ending. Just judging by that one panel, its even reminiscent of the happyish ending from the 25th episode of the anime.

^ No idea but I like the look of it.
I suspect it's one of his doujinshis that he does on and off based on his own series. He usually sells them at Comicket or the like.

Sweet! Let's try figuring out what it is.
(Kinda like going on a scavenger hunt for info. lol!)
A follow-up..
I've also noticed he has a 2012 calander available. Appears to be a single sheet which looks like a poster style. The writing is tiny, but I can see COMIC MARKET wrote on the lower left corner of it. I'm now going with Sean Gaffney's theory that stuff like this is being sold at Comiket. I suspect this would be very difficult to get.
Winter Comiket is only mere days away - December 29-31.
Here's the official English page of Comiket..
http://www.comiket.co.jp/index_e.html
And here's the official Japanese page (which has a lot more info)..
http://www.comiket.co.jp/
(These loaded really slow for me.)
Anyone want to go and bring us back some loot? :il_hahaha:
Edit: I hate online translators but used one anyways to at least find out about the calendar on Rikdou's site. I believe it's printed on a B4 paper(?) which is not very big (250mm x 353mm or 10.1 x 14.3 inch). Calanders are very limited. First-come first-serve basis. "... please ahead of time!"
^Looks like that calendar and commemorative book went for 3800 JPY (just a little over 49 USD).
I'm currently browsing online auctions at the moment for Comiket 81 material. There's Touhou Project doujins as far as the eye can see. O_o
Edit: I'm not a major fan of Touhou but some of these doujins have fantastic artwork.
^ Is there a version of that where you can see the other characters?
^If there is, I haven't seen it yet.
*applauds the bowing Excel...... and the Hyatt and Il Palazzo I can hardly see* :il_hahaha:
So, I now have a copy of this, thanks to my friend who was at Comiket and is completely awesome and fantastic.
First off, no, I'm not scanning it. I don't need Rikdo mad at me.
We get the two 'hot springs' one-shots from YKO post-manga here, expanded greatly to serve as a 'wraparound' for the doujinshi itself. Everyone is nude. Including the men. Aside from this main part, there are several 'tributes' from various artists, and also Nabeshin, who gives a page-long textual thank you.
The doujin ends with the original ending of the manga from YKO, which was rewritten for the tankobon.
There is no explicit content in the doujinshi beyond the constant nudity you'd expect from hot springs scenes.
There was also a one-page small calendar given away, with pictures of Excel, Elgala and Hyatt, as well as two elf-eared girls who I believe are from his Deathless series which is running in Young King.
I'm so jealous...
Actually, I take that back about nothing explicit. I hadn't read closely enough.
There is a two-page scene where, um, Il Palazzo is anally screwed by Excel (who is loving it. Il Palazzo is stoic). It's in a different art style than the hot springs stuff and may be another artist (actually, given Il Palazzo looks almost exactly like Integra Hellsing in it, I'm morbidly thinking it might be Hirano's work). It is part of a fantasy Elgala is having in the springs, as far as I can make out, and leads to beatings.
Now I wonder if someone in Japan was reading Uncreativity's old fanfics... >_>
Sorry for all the teasing. ^^;; Just trying to keep you informed.
Where can we obtain this material?

@Sean Gaffney: I respect your decision completely to not make scans.
Any chance we could see just a photo or two of the book? Nothing too fancy, just something good for reference purposes.

Sounds reasonable.
I just won the commemoration book on Yahoo Auctions Japan. So now all I have to do is figure out how to pay for it, since Yahoo Japan does not seem to like my dirty gaijin credit card. :lordilvryannoyed:

My main problem with this is that there are very few pages not filled with nudity. Including the loli characters (yeah, Umi is loli the whole doujin, given it's post-ending). I'll see if I can find something non-arrest-worthy.

Good find, SWamP!
That's great, these scans must've just been made recently, I'm sure they didn't exist in the past.
Hopefully they'll upload the specials and stuff too?
As well as the two alternate endings?
I also pray for fan translations > _ >
Given the fan translations of Excel Saga in the past have amounted to one group doing about the first 4 volumes and then giving up, I'd stick with hoping that Viz continues to release the series. ^^;;
Well I based that on the fact that no one had even scanlated raws before, but now this has happened.
I'm sure Viz will keep doing it, but I don't have much interest in waiting four years to find out properly how it ends.
I could literally learn to read Japanese myself in that time.

Where, exactly? And how? ???
From Mandarake, I just ordered it is all.
A Japanese shop.
So hey, Foggle and I, we both TOTALLY want this commemorative booky thing..!
We've been looking everywhere with no success though, we'd be willing to pay inhumane large sums of cash to get it, so if anyone comes across it, ANYWHERE, we're willing to take a look at it and order it..!
Really, we're literally dying to get this, need it, must have, etc, so any help would be appreciated, and you'd earn our undying thanks!!!
^It's become an elusive Holy Grail with the ending of the manga. I had given up on getting a copy last year. :elcry:
We're not giving up, every now and then we look for it, in hope that some sorry soul who has no sense of collectibles would sell one (or better, two) online so we could grab it, but it's next to impossible to find it..!
I actually considered sending Rikudou an email about it, hoping it was possible to buy a copy straight from him, but I doubt he'd be able to read the message, or worse, not have any copies available himself at all...
Can't stress how much we'd like to own this, so if any copies are available and you guys aren't planning on grabbing it, please let us know about it!!! :elhail:
I still wouldn't mind scoring a copy as well. If you or anyone else happen to find another extra for myself, please let me know.
I'll continue to look around for any leads.

I'd simply go to Japan and buy it, but it's probably not even that simple... :sumiyoshi:

Not long until 26 comes out anyway! Although I actually don't think I've even read 25 yet, I've just got it sitting here beside my bed.
I used to love Excel Saga so much, but the yearly waits between volumes killed it for me man, it did.
Ah, if it did, does it mean that your comemmorative artbook isn't so valued to you anymore..?
Which by chance means that you could send it to some fortunate people who do want it, relaly badly..?
*nudge nudge wink wink* :e_wink:

Thought I'd share some key search words I've been using to help locate copies of the commemorative book:
Comiket 81, C81, Excel Saga End Memorial book
Edit: Damn, I can't get the Japanese characters to post for "Excel Saga." X_x

Yeah, I can't believe I've been keeping up with Excel Saga for 10 years now (and I've been lurking these forums for about 8 years?). I was just a 14 year old kid when I first started reading it, and after all this time it's still my favorite manga. All this waiting and anticipation makes the plot twists so much more special.
It's sad that there is only one volume left to wait for, but at the same time I'm also excited to finally see how this story is going to end, and I'm glad this forum exists for me to share my excitement.
