Title: Evangelion to re-made into four films
Post by: E-E on September 12, 2006, 10:38:45 PM
it has been announced that
Evangelion is to be re-made into four anime movies
the first two re-telling the 26 episodes of the series and
the other two being brand new and hopfully tying up all the loose ends
for people who were unable to grasp both the final episode and the end of evangelion (not me):

What was the purpose of the other 2 films then?
Seems kinda pointless making it into a film - still I'll watch it. I'll also watch the other 2 as well.
Even though I'm not a huge fan.

QuoteOf the four upcoming films, two will essentially retell the original story, combining footage from the series with new backgrounds and soundtracks.

Isn't that exactly what they did with 'Evangelion: Death & Rebirth'.

Part of me feels that it will be interesting to see what the new stories they've got to tell are, but I can't help thinking - why mess with perfection?
Title: At least this might not get rushed like the others.

A third and fourth movie will finally let the Eva mythos resolve the whole Instrumentality arc rather than dropping off at the last minute like both of the old endings did. There are downsides to that, of course, but from watching the whole series and what parts of D&R/EoE I've seen, they validate George Lucas' claim about movies never being finished so much as abandoned. GAINAX did well IMO within what constraints were put on them by both fans and sponsors, granted, but even the supposed End of Evangelion leaves many threads hanging from the tatters of those it tried to flamethrower JSSDF-style. The fourth movie should be especially interesting if it deals with any aftermath of Third Impact and how life will go on if indeed it does post-Instrumentality.

Yeh I heard all this mess about how good Evangelion was, then I saw it. I never thought I could be that badly confused in my life. Not to mention, whiney teenagers get a bit old after awhile.

I wasn't unduly confused either  ; but I can easily see where people might be because of Evangelion's highly stylized (and later emergency-rationed) production values. The Instrumentality scenes during the original Eps 25-26 are the most troublesome, since the impression a fan walks away with from these depends entirely on how they interpret several highly ambiguous statements from characters whose very (in episode) existence, much less credibility, is open to question.
Examples fromm Ep.26: What world is Shinji saying he can exist in, if any? Does the proverbial "rainy day," which the ghost of Ritsuko says Shinji can still have fun on near the end, refer to Third Impact or simply life's inevitable if (hopefully  ) less-extreme gloomy times? Is the parallel world Shinji witnessed a true alternate universe, or just his own wishful delusion? (I'm an Angelic Days manga fan so I tend towards the former...) Whether or not the Instrumentality Project can be seen as successful in the series' ending, in terms of achieving the new existence SEELE/NERV/&c planned for Humanity (itself a thorny topic...), depends on the answers a fan puts to these questions. EoE is more explicit in having the Instrumentality fail; abjectly, albeit with the stated-yet-unresolved possibility of life returning to the devastated Earth at some future point.

Another thing I think that tends to confuse people is just the ending period.  The majority of mecha anime, and thereby the attitude with which mecha fans go into watching a mecha anime, are much more straight forward in action.  Barring Gundam, most mecha shows (though I'm not a mecha fan, so correct me if I'm wrong) don't delve too deeply into extreme drama.  And even Gundam's dramas tend towards the melodramas, not a real and explicit look into humanity, the driving force behind it, a person's existential crisis, etc.  When you watch through basically all of Evangelion, while it may imply that the ending will be a look into the mind, it's a subtle implication.  People get confused when suddenly there is no definitive, action-based ending and it all seems to be either a delusion or an alternate reality or... something, and they're not sure what.  It really is the last couple of episodes that throw people since it's not what they're expecting at all.

You're quite right. Exaggerating maybe on the degree of melodrama since Gundam does better than most as you point out. But clearly plot is given preference over character in the average mecha show; the exact opposite of Evangelion's style, especially in the later episodes.
When I was browsing Tiffany Grant's site months ago and listening to NPR's review of Eva, their handling of the arc did the best they could without going well into spoiler territory, but their view of the end tended towards the "delusional Shinji" theory that a more "normal" mecha show would've used for its ending context. I'll grant that it might (barely) be workable if one takes the JSSDF's orders during the movies into account and assumes Shinji is just accepting his inevitable execution when all is said and done; but IMO that requires trivializing or disregarding the testimony of several major characters during the ending eps. Not to mention the theory itself sets up the thus-intrigued viewer for an arguably worse disconnect once the more mystical/philosophical/WTF elements really begin showing up after Zeruel's trouncing, since it deliberately makes the series sound more "typical" than it is. (Plus this theory actually achieves the rare feat of making EoE sound optimistic by comparison...)
On the topic of EoE; is Revival going to be released here in the US like the platinums were? I'm seriously divided over whether to get the long-available D&R/EoE DVD set now and run the risk of duds (I've heard Manga had many defects with these...), or wait until the definitive cut arrives with (hopefully) better quality control.

I completely agree with you.  It's not a good idea to disregard the other characters - you completely lose a very important aspect of the conclusion.

As for Revival, I'm not sure about it, but if I hear something, I'll for sure let you know/

QuoteWhat a great song playing... i wonder what it's called...

My guess is "Simple World"

As far as the remake series is concerned, I'm still not thrilled about it.  The entire latter part of the series degenerated into psycho babble and Shinji's not stop angst-fest, and after waiting so long for Death/Rebirth and End of Evangelion I was even more disappointed in it.  The remake just seems to have updated art, but if all the melodrama and angst remain as thick as it was in the original, I'll have to pass.
Title: Re: Evangelion to re-made into four films
Post by: Poey on August 21, 2007, 02:16:02 PM
The "psycho babble" is what I love about the show. It was really interesting and indulgent. I wouldn't have liked the series nearly as much if it'd been a one-dimensional destroy-the-new-angel every episode. You can dislike Shinji's character but that was part of the point to having him (and Asuka's annoying attitude). They portray specific personalities.

QuoteI wouldn't have liked the series nearly as much if it'd been a one-dimensional destroy-the-new-angel every episode

Well neither would I, and having deep subject matter is great, I just think it came off as too pretentious and a bit too self-indulgent.  That appeals to some people, I'm just not one of them, and I know the creator of Evangelion, his name escapes me right now, based the character of Shinji off of his own insecurities but it's hard for me to get into a story when I want to club at least half the cast to death with a tire iron.  Asuka never bothered me as much as she did some others, and I never got the Rei obsession.  The show had enough good points to keep me watching to the end, but my problem is when I arrived at that end and reviewed the totality of the series and what it led up to, I just deflated a bit and went "Oh, right."

... well more he was going thro a suicidal phase prior to working on Evangelion.
The depth of the series has always been the staying power for me.The difference from the start and the end, to me its almost a parody of an anime genre in the Beginning.
Title: Re: Evangelion to re-made into four films
Post by: Poey on August 27, 2007, 10:10:36 AM
It really is a parody of anime at the beginning. It's a take on a Gundam-type thing. I just watched Death and Rebirth and The End of Eva last night again. Swept off my feet with crap I barely understand...

The commentary is very thought provoking (and funny sometimes).

EDITED: I forgot the "t" in "it". I am not a parody of anime.

EDIT I just went all around the internet looking it up.

The first movie was in theaters in Japan last summer I guess. It's set for release in Japan in April/May 2008, and there hasn't been any licensing or anything for international release.

The second movie is set for release this year sometime.

Necro post of DOOOM!! ^^

Last Saturday (in addition to watching Zombieland on the same day.... and I NEVER go out to watch two movies in one day) I saw part one at the movie theater..
Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone
It's basically the first six episodes of the series.

I've always felt intimidated to watch the series all the way through. Seems that many say the ending was "effed up" and left most thinking WTF they just saw. YET at the same time, Neon Genesis Evangelion has somehow been called one of the greatest animes of all time. O_o When I first heard this rebuild of Evangelion was hitting movie theaters this year I felt more than compelled to check it out.

What this "rebuild" means:
-First and formost, the story has been reworked just enough to allow both fans and non-fans to get a better grasp on what's going on.

-The animation has been cleaned up crystal clear from its original release - no color or dirt flaws. Additionally, some very slick CG animation has been implimented within the old animation making this production feel very up-to-date to current standards.

-Additional brand new animation and at least one new character (that I know of atm) will be brought into the mix.

So... What did I think? To tell the truth, I'm not entirely sure yet storywise - there's so much more I wanted to know. When the end credits started to roll I wanted more. Strangely enough I think I'll be going along for the ride. The curiosity factor is strong in this one.

But... maaaaan.... If I EVER met a Shinji Ikari in real life, I'd... have to just run him over with my car and back up over him again and again. ugh...! :e_wink:

I know, Shinji vies for "Whiniest Bitch in Anime," and he really needs to just have the emo hit the fuck out of him. One reason I couldn't stand the series, all the characters were so unlikeable I didn't really give a shit if they died.

Still doubt I will go out of my way to see this.
Title: Re: Evangelion to re-made into four films

In the original series, Shinji was a depressed child who was easy to sympathize with. In the new movie, he's a whiny bitch with no depth whatsoever.

Just my opinion.

I bought a copy of the first movie months before the official release at a dvd store in sydney's chinatown. I don't know if it was a legit copy, but it had proper subtitles and seemed decent. I bought other things there that didn't have proper subs at all and they were definantly illegal copies. I didn't realise that at the time.

If I see the 2nd movie there, i will buy it. Just because i have to see what happens. Not because Kaworu's there. Not at all.

With that said, 2.0 was fucking amazing! I absolutely loved it! Probably my second favorite Evangelion so far (after End of Eva).

J-List has the blue ray listed. Who's fan enough to buy the Japanese release? I saw a Hong Kong release of the movie, with english subs. I might buy that - because im desperate to see it. Don't worry, I'll buy the real release too.

Behold! He plays a SDAT tape player. I believe the series is still set in the 90s... Asuka is seen playing a pretty old portable console that I don't belive I've ever seen.

Finished the movie! The first half is reminiscent of the Asuka introduction episodes, but the other half feels more like the end of evangelion, with it's reckless abandon for the character's lives - i say no moar.

The 5th child is Mari from North America(i think). Since each country can only have 3 evas, she follows a different chain o' command. She has a different viewpoint of piloting eva, that it's fun, and she gets lots of enjoyment out of the whole procedure.

This movie will introduce a couple new ideas, so expect the unexpected! Also, the characters will have more open and differing personalities particularly Rei, Asuka, Shinji, Misato and Ikari.

Uhhhhh..... original series?

My mind's been fucked. I need to get it when comes out on DVD. I wonder where they're going with the 3rd and 4th movies. I'm so perplex. This is going to be interesting.

I've heard the 2.0 installment was quite a turnaround from the original.
But is it better?

that's for you to decide.

They really made up a whole bunch of new stuff that is completely different from the series. Personally, I DON'T like it, but I'll wait until the next movie to finalise that opinion - it ends on a sorta cliff-hanger.

I like the original series and End of Eva a lot more than the Rebuild movies so far, tbh.

I adored the first movie. It was also pretty much the same as the series, so there isn't much explanation behind it.

The second one screwed with my mind. I don't know if I like more or less, or if I should even be comparing it to the series. I really have to see where the movies take it before I can judge. It's just... different. There were a few complaints I had with the second movie, but those were surface-level artistic complaints, not anything to do with the story or characters really.

I thought some of the music, on at least 2 different occasions, was inappropriate. 1 was Asuka's entrance (the generic rock-metal guitar solo thing... in 3, I actually didn't like how it was in 3 which might be weird). The second was when Unit 01 went berserk with the dummy plug and Shinji went "oh no!" and ate Asuka. I liked what they were trying to do with the music, but ... eh, I thought it just came off misplaced.

Oh yeah, and the new girl... interesting. So far I'm not sure what purpose she really serves. I'm curious. She obviously must have to do with something more later. So I don't really know what I think right now.

Yeah, Mari's presence in the movie seemed more like a cameo appearance than anything else. I wonder what's up with her.
