did anyone get them this week lol. it was a little hard wasn't it but randamo was right on the first 3. here are the answers

1. What started the first world war? (i'm looking for the event not the causes)

that would be the assassination of the Achduke franz ferdinand of Austro-Hungary. it's more unfortunate when you consider the driver got lost and took a wrong turn which led to the achduke getting shot.

2. The German offensive through belgium and france was planned in 1911. What was the name of the plan.

the Schlieffen plan. it didn't go well because the german minister of war paniced when the russians mobilised sooner then thought and made the right weaker not stronger

3. on the 22 of april the war became worse with the introduction of what?

Poison gas. first used during the 2nd battle of ypres eventually both sides would use it and develop more insidious gas weapons including mustard gas

4. What was the longest battle to be fought and how long was it?

the battle of verdun. starting on febuarary 21 1916 all the way to december 5th of the same year. the battle ended with the total of 976,000 casualties in a german plan to "bleed France dry".
 
5. What happened on the 1st of july 1916

The Battle of the Somme commeneced. The first day is normally remembered of this battle as it lead to 60,000 dead or wounded on the british forces in the first 12 hours when they went over the top straight into enemy machine gun fire and found that the barbed wire was still intact. There is not many families in the UK that cannot claim they had an ancestor at the somme

The Zimmermann telegraph was sent to the Mexican government to encourage them to invade the US to prevent the latter from joining the western front. it was intercepted by the british and the americans and, aswell as unrestricted submarine warfare being used again, led to america declaring war

The Tank made it's frirst appearance on the somme in 1916. It's most famous contribution was the battle of cambrai where 200 or so tanks smashed through the infamous hindenberg line.

8. what is a german airship called?

They were named Zeppelins after the designer of the first one. When the zeppelins were unleashed on london in 1915 the government ordered that no air raid sirens were to be sounded as they could attract the zeppelins. in paris parrots were put on top of the eiffel tower to 'warn' of any zeppelins, wierd idea that one.

9. in commonwealth countries what is the symbole of armistice day?

The Pooppy as it was the only flower to grow in no-mans land as the shelling churnned the mud and the poppy was the only flower sturdy enough to grow there. It was then immortalised by the poem "in flanders field".

10. when did the first world war end and how many were casualties in the conflict?

The first world war ended with the armistace one the eleventh hour of 11/11/1918. between 28 - 30 million people were killed or wounded in the 4 years of warfare.
