Are the novels better or something?  If they are, I will indeed read them.

Since the novels aren't released in english (right?) where might I go about reading them?

There was a group that translated them on the net quite awhile ago, releasing the novels in PDF format. Probably could get a torrent or something for it.
I haven't gotten around to reading them yet XD

I like Haruhi... and to me, it seems like most the people that hate it don't have any very good reasoning other than that it's so popular. How lots of things seem to be >_>; "Dude, this show is awesome!" then "God, everyone likes it and it sucks so much!". Damn conforming anti-conformists

Watched the first 4 episodes and I will say it certainly the best and funniest anime apart from excel saga I have seen for a long time.

I think it was that very clip on YouTube that gave me my first exposure to Haruhi-ism.
Pure gold it was.

It was "cancelled" for a new anime project.  But said project is being run by none other than Haruhi herself.
