I tried looking it up on Amazon, but to no avail it doesnt exist for purchase in english. Anyone know if it will be adapted to english? I know second season is coming soon in the fall but I would like to read the original work.

Umm and when could I expect that they could be released? >.>
wait holy crap! Its the whole light novel series!? /read /read /read
......
sorry im gone now be back after ive read all of this!!!!!
Wow so far on novel 7, truly amazing.
My favorite so far is novel 4 "The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi", truly a literary masterpiece.
General background of it is Kyon is thrown into a world where everyone has lost there memory of what happened in the 6 months the SOS Brigade was formed except him. Haruhi has vanished along with Koizumi who both have lost there powers, Mikuru has lost all memory of Kyon and isnt a time traveler and Nagato is a simple, shy, alone bookworm of the literary club who is nothing more then a human.
In the ultimate climax Kyon must face of with the one being powerful enough to rob everyone of their identities and powers and is given the choice: To forever stay in this world where he is a normal high school guy with no wild or crazy adventures, or to save the world he has lost and return to his former life.
can i ask what the overall plot is? what is haruhi?
That is a difficult question, but here is a summery of the story.
This story is told by the Main male character of the series, Kyon, who acts as the Narrator for both the anime and the light novel.
Kyon enters his first year of high school, and at this point of his life he has dropped all those childhood fantasy's that we all had at one time or another. He no longer believes on things like Aliens, Time Travelers, Espers, Demons, etc etc. He is ready to live a normal high school life and have normal high school experiences.
That is until the day he met Suzumiya Haruhi...
This girl, who sat behind Kyon gave this introduction:
"If there are any Aliens, Time Travelers, Espers, or Sliders here please follow me! That is all."
This is where Kyon's life is thrown off the deep end of reality. Because he talks to Haruhi and gives her the idea to form a club to find the "mysteries" of the world. He is forced to join along with three other members: Yuki, Koizumi, and Mikuru.
These three people Kyon learns just happen to be a Alien, Esper, and Time Traveler (respectively)
But Kyon is further forced to learn that this girl, Suzumiya Haruhi is also not an ordinary girl. This girl who so wishes to meet and experiences mysteries things has the power to make whatever she wishes come true. She is in a sense God, but she doesnt realize it and the secret goal of the SOS Brigade (the club Haruhi makes) is to keep her from becoming bored and changing the world as well as keep her from knowing of her powers because of the danger that could pose.
The novel itself consists of 9 volumes, 5 of them are story lines that pretain to the main plot of the series while 4 volumes are a collection of short stories that happen inbetween or during events in the main plot that are significant.
Kyon goes through many different unbelievable situations that include:
Being sucked into a new world created by Haruhi (Volume 1)
Making a movie of Haruhi's that alters the world (Volume 2)
Being thrown into a world where Kyon has lost Haruhi and everyone has lost their memory except for his own (volume 4)
Completing missions with Mikuru to save the future (volume 7)
The true enemy starts to show its face and things begin to set in motion (volume 9)
Some of the short stories include:
Kyon traveling back in time 3 years
Kyon spending almost 600 years reliving his summer vacation
Being trapped by aliens in a mansion in a blizzard
Completing various tasks to save his own life as well as the lives of his fellow brigade members
and much much more....
Its a VERY good series, you should def check it out!
sounds pretty hectic. ive already watched the 2nd episode. i'll check out that site that has the light novels. pretty amazing we are privy to the books for free and everything.
privy?
that we can see it. it's available to us.
or are you just mocking me?
i like your new mini movie thingy.
no no just dont get what privy means...
Also the light novel series has been out for over 5 years now. If it was going to be translated into english it would have been done by now...
just look in a dictionary. i'll look for you.
priv·y priv·i·er, priv·i·est, noun, plural priv·ies.
–adjective 1. participating in the knowledge of something private or secret (usually fol. by to): Many persons were privy to the plot.
2. private; assigned to private uses.
3. belonging or pertaining to some particular person, esp. with reference to a sovereign.
4. secret, concealed, hidden, or secluded.
5. acting or done in secret.
and there still is chance the books come out, i mean, is this not a cult anime? the television show came out only in August, so after a while, it could happen.
Hmm I suppose that is true
im up to the 2nd volume.
so, is this a sci-fi? it works in that this girl has an ability to create data uninitentionally, and so is able to manipulate the universe and create things, therefore becoming a sort of god or something?
sounds like something douglas adams would come up with, but he'd make it so hilarious. hmm, if only he did make this...
what do you think makes this show/book so good. a plot thingy, the art, or something else?
Well its kinda everything. Haruhi is someone that almost everyone can relate to. She is the kind of person that still wants to believe on the things we have all given up on. In a way she kind of gives a little hope to people.
The anime was very well done. With good voice actors, a plot that followed the original work fairly spot on, and great art.
The original work is also very good. I just love reading it over again. This is a comedy/sci-fi btw.
i have to say there is only one problem: i have to read off a computer screen to read the story, i'd much rather get the books, but what can you do? gotta be grateful those people who can understand japanese deciphered the books for us.
hey, i noticed the rating on the dvd is MA15+ restricted and combined with the black and red colouring, i started to get the idea it's a high rating show. why? as far as i can tell it's not that bad. however, they did rate azumanga daoih as MA15+ and i still can't figure out why. must be the swearing in it.they swear more in summer heights high and rate it only M.
but what makes haruhi so bad?

i've seen worse in pg, meaning children are allowed to watch it.
the whole freaking system's out of order! - homer simpson.
Well also has a murder mystery with a person getting stabbed. I guess that could count. Maybe also the ideas expressed, like how Haruhi is God and all that. Saying that could make little kids who dont know any better actually believe it because they are not yet at the age to understand it.
hmm, its a tizzy thing.
i should actually watch the show and look at the rating more closely. i mean, they dont sell the dvds at the store and i'd have to get it delivered to actually see. ah, well
yeah, i checked and it says strong sexual themes.
i mean, there's no nudity and as far as i know, its only the skimpy outfits mikaru has to wear and well, the video. check the video there. its above this.
Video?
i have no idea what to call it. it's this thing.

Well it also talks a lot about the concept of God etc. That can be impressionable on young kids
im really starting to get into it now. i can just read and read it.
Good for u!
ehe. i need to get otaku over something.
Over Haruhi?
over the show, book, whatever.
my favourite character is yuki - she's so cool. Kyon's a close second place. Haruhi's not actually my favourite character - way down the list. she beats mikuru-chan, though.
I dont know, her personality comes out more later in the volumes. If you really think about it, the one who knows how this will all end is Mikuru (atleast the adult one) But I agree that Yuki is also my favorite.
its going to be interesting to see how this all ends. do you know when the last one comes out?
where are you reading this? <_< i clicked the link taht you posted at the beginning, and now that im interested in reading/watching this anime..yeah

Realised it's been 3 years or so since last post :hdead:
Does anyone buy the novels these days? I have, then wonder what I liked about them so much. They read like primary school books. Nonetheless, I get them and enjoy them to some extent.
Vol 10 is about to be released in Japan, 4 years after the last release. I wonder when they're gonna end this thing. I thought 10 was the last!

Isn't the reason it took 4 years because the author just got super lazy since he didn't actually have to do any real work due to all the royalties he made off the anime adaptation and merchandise sales? Just what I heard.
I heard pretty much the same story, Foggle.
4 whole years though! :e_shocked:
Strangely enough they're available here locally too.
