Website Hosting - Advice Please

Hey guys, I have a little question for my peeps here about web hosting.  I am planning on launching my own site where I will host my writing, including my first full length novel in PDF format with a "tip jar" but I don't really have my finger to the pulse on the web hosting market.  What hosts are the best?  And I intend to go with a pay service - I don't want pop-ups or any of that rubbish, and I'm told it's pretty cheap anymore, so dropping $50 per annum or whatever doesn't phase me.

Also, while we're on it, I don't have much of any experience with PayPal, so how would I go setting one up?  I've poked around their site, but I'm not really sure what to do.  Any advice is welcome.

My friend uses Simple Host.  Relatively cheap, no popups, lots of webspace, quick download/upload times, etc.  He also hosts my website as a subdomain.
