It's been awhile since I've done this, and I kind of miss it! I am one issue behind the Japanese release and I have ~rudimentary Japanese skills~ so ASK ME ANYTHING.
SPOILER OF THE MOMENT: Because the Excel/robots bond isn't confusing enough, Excel is now in the body of the Excelinator. ULTRA-CONFUSING! :e_shocked:
Gawhaaaaaat??? Well, I suppose nothing is extremely unlikely in Excel saga... So have there been any Robo-Excel/Iwata fights? Because that might break the city, not to mention Matsuya, Watanabe, Hyatt, Elgala, and Sumiyoshi. Heh... How about any more about Miwa's role?
No, Robo-Excel is a VERY recent thing that just happened in the last chapter. Excel does have a cool fight with Misaki beforehand which confirms that she can (somehow) nullify their weapons (this happened once before, when Iwata tried to shoot her in volume... 10, I think?).
As for Miwa... well, she's been shown to be puppetmaster to both Kabapu and Il Palazzo. (Though she doesn't seem to like either of them all that much, haha.) I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say she's the true villain of the series.
Ah, I forgot about the whole weapon neutralization during the fake-idol bit. Makes sense...
As for Miwa, that bit of tantalizing news makes me exceedingly happy.
Miwa is a very exciting character. I still think she is really Shiouji's dad, but there's no tangible evidence for that (unless it's buried somewhere in the mountains and mountains of Japanese I haven't attempted to read yet).
Well that confirms my guess that Miwa is the puppetmaster. Now, the only question is to what ends? Also, given what was happening with Excel in Vol. 19 and how she seemed to have a sympathetic reaction to Shiouji's tinkering with Nishiki, I figure she is not natural herself.
I have a peculiar question: has Momochi had a more prominent role in anything? 'Cause I am still rather suspicious of her...
Hopefully I'll uncover more about Miwa as I go... I've been trying to read through the books starting with chapter 20, but I'm not very fluent, so it's a long and tedious process.
It's tempting to spoil the funnier jokes and dialogue exchanges, but that's just cruel, I think. :il_hahaha:

I don't blame you! But no, she still hasn't done much of anything beyond just being her suspicious self.
CHAPTER 156 SPOILERS
(http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc271/Uncreativity/xl156_03.jpg)
Il Palazzo shows up and takes Excel (still in the robot body) back to the base. (Text on this page isn't anything special; Excel is hailing him and Misaki is going, "DON'T!")
Shiouji returns home with Elgala and Excel's now-comatose actual body. He and Misaki tell Elgala about Teriha and robots. Miwa and Kabapu make evil faces, but I haven't bothered to read what either one of them are saying.
At the end of the chapter, Elgala goes to break the news to Excel that she is now a robot. For her part, Excel seems pretty darn okay with it. I see the word "convenient" in there.
Basically, yes. Excel is fine with it because she has Il Palazzo's approval now.
Elgala is under the impression that Excel's real body will die if she says like this, but Excel seems all right with that, too.
^Gosh that's depressing... All Excel basically lives for is Il Palazzo.

Well... yeah. That's been the case since the first chapter of the first volume. Hell, that's been the case BEFORE the first chapter of the first volume.
lol daitenzin
^ I know but at least at the time he hadn't abandoned her, so I could tolerate it.
So... Does it seem like the series will be coming to a close, soon? I'm still really enjoying it but I'm curious. There'd better not be a ton of questions that are left unanswered at the end, though; I hate when author's do that.
I will say, I don't think Il Palazzo's intent is malicious. He doesn't understand Excel; he has yet to figure out that she's incompetent, for one, and I doubt he even realizes that she loves him. And he's not only completely freaking nuts (I'm not convinced that both of his personalities even realize he HAS abandoned Excel), but is also completely under Miwa's thumb right now, and probably has been for a longer time than anybody suspects...
BUT ANYWAY.
Yes, the series is undoubtedly drawing to a close. I don't know how much longer it will take, because it's just a slow-paced manga, but MAJOR THINGS have been happening nearly every chapter lately.

I see. As I'm sure you've all noticed I'm pretty dumb so I don't always realize things until they're pointed out. I'll shut up about Il Palazzo until the final volume is released.

Oh, wow! I can't wait to read it! I'm so glad that Viz releases mangas faster than most companies. If Broccoli Books had gotten ahold of this series we'd all be dead before the final volume would be released.
Holy hell.
It looks like Excel has become finally something that Il Palazzo needs, or wanted from the beginning. I mean, it's obvious that she's something, but without "the core" she's probably incomplete or some shizz. That's why Il Palazzo adopted her back.
Also, please post the page with Miwa and Kabapu making evil faces. I love evil faces.
Oh! Oh! Forgot to ask! Has it been revealed just what Il Palazzo did to Hyatt's body yet?

Oh! Oh! Forgot to ask! Has it been revealed just what Il Palazzo did to Hyatt's body yet?
Nope.
This is the only really exciting thing that happens in the new chapter:
That is disturbingly amazing.
All makes sense now...
Sweet jeeezus..!!! What am I seeing..? O_o
It's as though Kabapu is mocking himself..
Surely he didn't voluntarily decide to wear that.
Some sort of odd plan to get into the public eye? It would work! Maybe not for the right reasons though.
Also looks as though Misaki just beat up Iwata? heh..
ok I can't wait to see these in english to explain what the feth is happening
Elgala is still worried about Excel being trapped in the robot body, so she convinces Hyatt to help her convince Excel that she wants to go back to being a human being (by eating meat in front of her and such).
Of course, Excel gets to sit next to Il Palazzo and like... bubbles and blushes and is full of glee for an ENTIRE PAGE, to the point that her comatose body tears up with joy. (How a robot blushes is beyond me, but it doesn't seem surprising that Shiouji would would build in such a function. :|a)
Later on, Excel bursts in on Watanabe and Sumiyoshi, presumably to fight them. It's finally starting to kick in that being a robot really isn't a good thing, and she thinks, "But if not for this body, then Lord Il Palazzo..." and a bunch of warning lights go off in Miwa's monitors.
At the very end, Miwa does something to Umi's computer; I think she's giving her the ability to see what's going on with Excel, but I can't really translate anything specifically right now. Basically, I haven't had time to go through very thoroughly, and my tablet is broken, which makes it a bitch to look up kanji. (Basically, I have to either use my laptop touchpad or my DS kanji dictionary, neither of which are fun or easy options).
So apart from robo-iwata, now there will be robo-excel in one of the later volume, whats next.

Excel has already kinda-sorta remembered Umi. She recognizes her in volume 20, and has more flashbacks as she goes.
Here's my favorite page from chapter 159:
This chapter was a weird one. It doesn't say what shocking thing Umi saw at the end of the last chapter (all we see of Umi is the first page with the caption, "Can Umi's power bring Excel back?"). Excel herself sleeps for nearly the entire chapter, while Elgala keeps pissing her off by waking her up.
The weirdest thing that happens, however, is that SOMETHING takes over Iwata's body. It refers to itself as "we" and before anyone asks, it doesn't talk like Il Palazzo, Ropponmatsu (either model), Tenmangu, or Miwa (except the Miwa of the past, I guess, but that's not really conclusive evidence). Though I suppose it makes a very... Tenmangu-y face in the last panel? That's just my opinion. But again, it doesn't talk like him at all. It has a polite but excessively cheerful demeanor... reminds me of Xellos, just a little.
This "we" doesn't tell Misaki much, but it DOES say this: "That thing your side calls the 'core'... another 'core'--" And it cuts off there, but it uses a particle that means that "core" is an indirect object to the following verb. What that implies, basically, is that whatever the hell is possessing Iwata's body meant to say more than just "there IS another core" or even "We HAVE another core." It COULD be saying, "Another core is being used," or even "We made another core," but there's no way of telling.
Of course, right after cores are mentioned, the scene then cuts straight to Excel. Drop yourself down a pit if you're actually surprised at that one.
ETA: Pffhahaha... I just now glanced at the page I actually uploaded, and Kabapu is saying, "My desire to talk to you is mountainous... but first, THE BATHROOM."
WOW.
All this craziness better be explained by the time the manga has ended! I'll rage if there's any loose ends that are left. I bought this manga for the comedy but the increasingly screwy plot makes my brain hurt trying to figure out. Even though I'm stupid I still would've picked it up but it would've been nice to know how freaking complicated it gets!
So it refers to himself as "we"... maybe those are the people from Solaria or some shiet?
Christ... I love tihs manga. I really do, but I hope it won't be cancelled and forced to end prematurely. I hope Rikdo will explain everything and we will get a nice end where Il Palazzo goes down along with mustache man...
AND EXCEL STARTS LIVING AS A PART OF UMI'S FAMILY. : D
I like the theory, Kharaxel!
And I second the rest of what you say 100%!
:D
Bah, what kind of ending is that? I want it to end in a way where things are explained, and epic things go down, but then everything goes exactly back to the way it used to be. It's been awhile since Excel Saga has had a nice return to the ol' status quo.
I'd be quite content with that, too, just so long as "return to the status quo" doesn't mean "return to the pre-Elgala status quo". :elhail:
Though I wonder how half the Kabapu crew would take that. Misaki and Sumiyoshi, sure, they could handle it. But Watanabe and Iwata? I don't know what they'd do if "normal" reared its head again...
Even if it does, I don't doubt there will be at least small changes. It seems pretty obvious Misaki and Iwata are gonna get together, and probably Watanabe and Hyatt as well. (CONGRATULATIONS, MR. NECROPHILIAC.)

I knew that Misaki was too good of a girl to be working for the likes of Kabapu from the get go. Too smart, too logical, too reasonable of a person.
She'd be fine.
I've also felt that Sumiyoshi was kinda out of place among the crew later on. He doesn't have an evil bone in his body. While he may feel part of a team, he's simply making ends meet with his paychecks - It's a job.
But yeah, the ol' status quo would suit him fine.

Iwata is hopelessly.. what's the word I'm looking for--
enthralled by Misaki. I figure wherever she goes, Iwata will never be too far behind. That said, I could imagine Misaki parting ways with the Department of Environmental Security in a heartbeat when she feels the last straw has been made with Kabapu and she can take no more. And Iwata will be right there with her.
Watanabe's situation is.. somewhat similar. As of now he's a man who feels there's nothing left to lose. When he reconciles with Hyatt (and I believe he will!), his anger will no longer be there to motivate him in Kabapu's unscrupulous activities. He'll quit his job with Kabapu and start a fresh new life with "Miss Ayasugi".
^Such scans are torturous.
I'd recognise that oblique tooth anywheres - That's the real Excel.
Hahaha, Excel is going, "Don't believe in me! Believe in me who doesn't believe in you!"
ETA: Or wait, probably more like, "Don't believe in yourself! Believe in me who doesn't believe in you!" (I've only seen the first ep of Gurren Lagann and "myself" and "yourself" are the same word in Japanese.)
Hmmm, I wonder what happens in this chapter.
Knowing Rikdo probably nothing of importance. : P

Holy Brownie ended? Too bad.
Never got a chance to see much of it though.
@SWamP: I don't think that site likes hotlinking - the pics don't show up.
But copy and pasting the urls does allow them to display.
How long did Holy Brownie run and how many volumes are out so far? I'm going to assume for now it was made before Excel Saga and is shorter.
Gee, thanks, Foggle. :e_confused:
Holy Brownie began in 2001, mostly running in Young King Ours +, a spinoff offshoot. It ran for 6 volumes. It is more explicit than Excel Saga in terms of nudity and violence, at least in the early volume I have, so is unlikely to be picked up by Viz - who, as we know, are looking for more Rikdo titles after Excel Saga's 200th week on the best seller lists. ^_-
Saikano was pretty darn sexually explicit and that's a Viz manga. I don't see why they'd pass on Holy Brownie.
I doubt the problem is a lack of willingness to work on the title, but more a lack of marketability.
I believe Uncreativity hit the nail on the head.
Wish she had missed it by a mile though... :e_wink:

Quickie translations of the text accompanying those pictures:
QuoteAre we drawing nearer to the core? Of the story, I mean.
Iwata is... "cool"...
(That may be Tenmangu, but it's also Iwata in the picture. Sumiyoshi and Watanabe are being terrified at his coolness.)
QuoteSecond returns to Mama Shiouji's hands, and it seems like she's helping Umi.
In regards to First, it seems that she is the core, but we've learned that somehow she's has been fragmented.
What the hell is this "core," anyway?
However, it looks like the one who left those fragments behind was Umi's father.
Apparently the core, which could not be duplicated, could only be splintered by way of a total clutz.
What a terrible capacity for clumsiness indeed...
Has Umi's father even been mentioned before now? This is as opposed to Shiouji's father, right?
Man, I've been reviewing Excel Saga volume by volume for my blog, and it's still stunning just how utterly plotty it got right around the introduction of Umi. I mean, it had plot before then, of course, but this was like "OK, must move into OVERDRIVE now!".
I, personally, like this overdrive. : D
So, Umi's father, eh? Interesting.
The only time I remember Umi's father being mentioned before is in the volume 12 profiles, where it notes that he's the one who suggested Umi work for Shiouji.

Not a problem, Foggle. The thread is clearly marked.
I can sympathize with accidentally seeing a spoiler when one really did not want to, but was really hoping this thread title would keep that problem to a bare minimum... :e_confused:
It would be nice to have an actual spoiler tag that makes you click for them. We did for awhile, didn't we?

I recall us having this at the old board before moving everything to SMF.
I'll talk to Dave about setting up a clickable spoiler tag mod.
To be honest this has been on the back of my mind for a while.
I'll get on it..

Don't know what crawled up his bum, but whatever.
Also, when the thread is clearly labelled "Uncreativity's Shiny New Thread of Spoilers and Spoiling You (SPOILER WARNING), I think that's clear and all.
Kind of a shame, but it was Lan's decision.
.. I do wish he had PMed or emailed me to talk about it first. @_@ (And he still can if he wants.)
Anyways, let's move along. :e_wink:
Edit: Lan contacted me to say there are absolutely no ill feelings toward anyone and regrets that his sudden departure might have been taken in a wrong way. He said he knew the thread was clearly marked.
It's all good, everyone. ^^
OH SNAP!
So... Rikudo finally did it.
lol
I wonder what will happen in the next chapters, and it's a real shame we can't have a look at them in full. : <
This month's spoilers!!
Umi is upset about Teriha-san VIOLENTLY DISMANTLING Ropponmatsu II.
Kabapu is like, "oh hey she resembles that girl I found with a bleeding head that one time 8Ua"
Shiouji explains the momdad situation to Kabapu. Actually it seems like he's explaining a lot, but I haven't really sat down with a dictionary or anything.
Excel beats Elgala up. Elgala tries to stand up for herself and is promptly beaten even more. Excel also drags Hyatt's naked ass out of that tube and kicks her around a little too. She forces them to get dressed and drags them to see Il Palazzo.
Il Palazzo seems to be in good spirits. Excel hails him, then on the very last page...
Gears up to punch him, crying, "Please forgive me for raising a hand against something that resembles Lord Il Palazzo!" It seems she doesn't think he's the real deal.

Mmm... You are reading the actual magazine, not any sort of scans, right?
FUUUUUU-
Finally! Shit is going down.
Here's hoping for a good Miwangu VS Excel showdown where she promptly beats the crap out of it.
Mmm... You are reading the actual magazine, not any sort of scans, right?
Yep. Sorry, guys. I don't have a scanner right now, either.
Excel: Lord Il Palazzo!
Il Palazzo: It feels like a long time since we've all been together. It's good to see you all healthy. Excel-kun?
Excel: Yes!
Il Palazzo: Various things have happened, but how has the world conquest been proceeding?
Excel: (MANY WORDS, TOO LAZY TO TRANSLATE)
Il Palazzo: Blah blah blah, you've all done very well.
(Elgala looks delighted at this; Excel less so)
Il Palazzo: Yes, this WONDERFUL WORLD... have we not already taken it into our grasp?
(Excel tears up and hails the SHIT out of him, hurting Elgala's ears)
Excel: Unacceptable! That you would keep this gullible subordinate Excel!
Elgala: Modesty!?
Excel: (MANY MORE WORDS I can make out a "stupid" and a "in all the history of space" and a "kill" in there; I believe it's something to the effect of, "I'D KILL ANYBODY FOR YOU" but don't quote me on that one)
Il Palazzo: Yes, you're quite reliable.
Excel: (begins to approach the throne while Elgala and Hyatt look on confused) Even if it's fictitious... even if it's an apparition... PLEASE FORGIVE ME FOR RAISING A HAND AGAINST SOMETHING THAT RESEMBLES LORD IL PALAZZO!!
(END CHAPTER)
hmmmm.....
i think
that maybe the real il palazzo died a long time ago and so did excel, they just retain some memories and feelings of who they once were
s-sob I am so confused
Il Palazzo catches Excel's fist and asks her what she's doing. She replies that he's an imposer because the REAL IL Palazzo would never have called the world "wonderful" (which he said in the last chapter). He tosses her across the room.
He tries to convince her that he's the real thing by sparkling at her and telling her she did a good job, but when she still doesn't believe him he admits it.
VERY ROUGH TRANSLATION:
 As I've been telling you, this is without a doubt his body.
:e_angry: LIES!
 It's not a lie. It seemed like he didn't need this body anymore. When I earnestly requested, he handed it over. It seems like I can do ~anything I want~ with it.
:e_angry: LIES! Let Lord Il Palazzo free! We're going to conquer the world!
:lordilannoyed: How boring. Why do I have to do that? All right~ You guys have had a hard enough time. Let's just cancel the city conquest. I'll serve him in your stead.
Excel: D8
By the way, Il Palazzo doesn't use his brackety speech bubbles the entire time; they're all normal ones.
Later on notIwata shows up and is like "Hey you give that guy his body back" and notIl Palazzo is like "lol no" and notIwata is like "oh okay."
There's another big revelation at the end but my grammar is too weak to tell what it is. I. Give me a little bit with a dictionary to give this chapter a more thorough look. I'll just throw this out there: ROPPONMATSU THE THIRD.
Okay, things are definitely coming to a head - maybe the vol. 25 predictions are not so off after all.
I think we still have a ways to go. We don't even know what Excel is yet. (MIWA AND FAKE IL PALAZZO SURE DON'T.)

Volume 30 is a nice, round number, and sounds like a fairly decent guess judging by Rikudou's pacing.
Personally, I'd be fine with it if this series continued on to 50 or more volumes, but unless some real shit goes down, the story as it currently stands definitely needs to end around or before #30 to keep things from getting stale.
Also, because I want to know how things work out before I'm in my 40s. :il_hahaha:
According to this (http://d.hatena.ne.jp/HAVE/20101216/1292504853), fake Il Palazzo's mannerisms resemble Shiouji's dad's... Shiouji referred to Miwa as "dad" in a previous chapter, but was he wrong? Or, since so much of the plot now appears to hinge on body-hopping, are both Miwa and fake!Il Palazzo Tenmangu? Or was Rikdo throwing a curve ball just to laugh at our pain?
I am so confused, you guys. I am trying to plow through earlier volumes to get some of the context clues I'm missing, but every time Shiouji talks I just want to cry a little. The day I can easily read Excel Saga is the day I will consider myself fluent in Japanese...
For now, I'm just going to drive myself a little crazy trying to discern which Il Palazzo is which.

No pics this month, sorry; I don't actually have enough money to buy the chapter right now. But!! I skimmed it at the store!
IMPORTANT POINTS:
- Miwa is Ropponmatsu III
- Il Palazzo's second personality is Tenmangu
- Excel is so completely devastated she even lets Elgala beat her up
oh, damn. To be honest, anyone who wants to keep the suprises should'nt read that. At all. In fact, I kind of regret reading that, even though I've run out of patience [just a little].
If that means that Excel or -- worse -- Iwata dies (and doesn't come back) before the series concludes, I might cry a little bit.
Or a lot.

I've kicked my butt several times for checking spoilers... b-but....
They're so difficult to resist!
In spite of what the recent spoilers might imply, I am sticking with my somewhat fanciful interpretation and time-line for events (and made-up events) leading up to the beginning of the manga:
http://www.excelsagaforum.com/index.php?topic=1242.msg50470#msg50470 (http://www.excelsagaforum.com/index.php?topic=1242.msg50470#msg50470)
Since it may be totally wrong, it probably doesn't need a spoiler warning!! ;)

WHUT! WHAT THE HELL!?
Calmed down... Hey, we just saw what Excels suit looks like without the jaket. A singlet, huh. Figured.
This is probably obvious, but...
That's not Excel.
Wait... WAIT WAIT WAIT!
WAAT?
If it's not Excel, then who the hell is it? I mean, it's obvious that something happened to her when Elgala nad Misaki made her touch THE DOOR but... wat?

She got possessed by SOMETHING. The second core? ALIEN GHOST? Sheesh, there's a lot of dialogue in this chapter...
Whatever it is, it fixes Iwata's arm, kisses Il Palazzo's body (causing Excel to burst into tears of blood), and exorcises (kills?) Tenmangu. Tenmangu also admits that the real Miwa is dead.
ETA: Oh wait, I can see why you're surprised to hear that's not Excel; there's a chapter preview missing in there.
Don't tell me that's it? She exorcises Tenmangu, we learn Miwa is dead and umm... TEH EDN? I mean, with that news that Excel Saga is ending soon, does this mean that this is TEH EDN, more or less?
RIKUDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I hope he pulls something awesome for the REAL ending, like... Kabapu and Il Palazzo fighting with Eye LAZORZ or something.
He better : P

Well, there's usually 6 per volume, and this is the second of the volume, meaning we probably have 4 more to go; that's ~150-160 pages, so it's not as bad as it seems! And just because Tenmangu has left Il Palazzo doesn't mean he's gone, even if he WAS pretty dramatic about it (come to think of it, I'm not sure where the Miwabot went between chapters).
It would be nice to have the real Il Palazzo back for the first time in like... gosh, I don't even know how many volumes. Tenmangu has, at the very least, been running the show since ~12 or so. I want to see how he reacts to all the stuff that's been happening. I don't think Kabapu is going to be too heavily involved in the ending, though. He's been kind of useless lately.

Does he really think that will still work on Excel?
It probably will.

Oh, oh wow. This chapter is amazing.
Excel fights off the thing possessing her and KICKS THE PLOT IN THE FACE while the ACROSS base crumbles around her.
And the real Il Palazzo is back! AND HE DOES A THING. A HELPFUL THING.
^Very interesting! And not inconsistent with my age estimates.
:e_annoyed: "Elgala! You know you're almost 27 by Volume 22!"
So hey, it's time for me to spoil you people.
But beware, this is some heavy spoiler shit.
At the end of previous chapter, Misaki began falling to her death.
Now in this chapter, we still se her falling to her death.
But Iwata jumps in after her and throws her into the air so that the others may catch her... before falling to his death himself.
Misaki is pretty much brooding over his demise, and the gang (minus Excel, who stayed with Ill Pala in the previous chapter) makes their escape.
Then they go back to Shiouji's institute of kinky pedo science, and there... they see Iwata who looks olde and/or who lost shitload of weight. Misaki comes up to him, grabs him as if to pummel him to death... and then jumps at him with, what I assume is, deep kiss. They land together on the ground and... then she starts pummeling him to death. Sumiyoshi and Watanabe drag her off him... and she has literally rivers of tears on her face.
She then shuts herself in a room.
Then some stuff happens, and we cut to stache man and Momochi talking about something.
Kabapu falls asleep, Momochi puts a blanket over him... and then fucking Tenmangu Shiouji calls her. Or she calls him. Dunno.
They talk, I think and then, Tenmangu laughs... and then Excel breaks in with a kick and drags Tenmangu out of his room... end of chapter.
Jesus, now to wait few years for translation. Fuck.
At one point, Shoiuji sort of apologizes to Elgala and Hyatt for everyone being so happy when Excel was left behind in the crumbling base. And Elgala is just like, "Pfft, she's like a tardigrade, you can't kill her." Only in Excel Saga would someone say 'tardigrade' instead of 'cockroach.'
Also, Excel seems to think Tenmangu is a drunken hobo.

For those who want to see Misaki completely lose it emotionally on the page, this is the chapter for you.
Because I can, I'll spoil you.
Wantanabe! Is he back to normal?
And YES, Isshiki's back! She's so pretty, I love her look.

Yes, the old Watanabe has been revived by seeing Hyatt again! It seems that Kabapu had Dr. Iwata brainwash him a little to cheer him up, and that's the real reason behind the drastic change. He still likes the pervy games, though.
