The first three episodes are currently subbed, so my question to everyone here is how many of you have converted to Haruhi-ism?
oh, so that's where she's from :o i'll have to look her up on youtube when i finish watching karin.
Here's a clip from episode 3, which shows you a fool-proof way to get a free computer.

I think I once got a comptuer like that. Then again, I may be wrong.

Just converted about 22 minutes ago. From what I understand of common law, since you introduced me to this, for the time being (ie between now and whenever I find another series to get excited about) I am, your biatch.
Damn common law.
"Next time on Haruhi, Episdoe one!"
"Wrong! Next time On Haruhi, episode 2, Haruhi, episode 1!"
I don't know why but that cracks me up.
Here's a nice size .gif for all my converties.

I saw some of the gifs on the chans and looked it up on youtube. I find it amusing but the greater question is how it became so popular so fast.
Oh and speaking of fads lets make that dance from the end song the new macarena  .

it's odd...perhaps it's my age (being a baby-boomer) but i couldn't help but think of an old, old rock song while watching the girls in that little dance number....the song was "three cool cats" by the coasters (1957...told ya it was old) if you can find a download of it, listen to it wand then watch the girls. :)
It was so funny how she got a free computer.
Shouta, The LOL Haibane.
Episode 4 Is now torrenting.
I have only one issue though. It will arrive at the same time as Karin #2.
Bah, waht am I talking about, Haruhi wins out automatically. Already watched thre first three eps twice and express-posted them to a mate (who is unfortunate enough to be on narrowband AND in the army).
I really hate the fact taht bittorrent goes to the first decimal point in the "percent downloaded" area... 100 "clicks" I can stand, but 1000? Man, there's only so long I can stare at the agonisingly slow download. 12Meg cable is not enough, I want gigabit FTTH!
Yeah, laugh it up, it's not my fult I was born and raised in a second-world country where "broadband" means 64k and capping at 10 gig is the norm.

at least you don't have to wait an hour or more to see a half-hour episode on youtube
Watched the first two eps. Loved the theme song for the first one Mi-mi-mikuru Beam! :D
Attempted to convert 3 friends, but think i've overloaded them with anime and they're reluctant to start watching yet another new series before finishing the others.
QuoteAttempted to convert 3 friends, but think i've overloaded them with anime
Stuff them.
I've got one mate who won't watch anything (anime or otherwise) until you physically force him too (or offer him beer to stay put).
You can send him DVDs or whatever, he'll jsut never watch them.
The best example o this was Kiddy Grade. We sent him the DVDs, and he didn't watch them for 6 weeks. Then, when he got up here on holidays, we forced it upon him. Top to tail in one night, and minutes after it was finished he was busy downloading wallpapers and the like...
(Incidentally, when we showed him ES he knew that we thought he'd think it was funny, so he deliberatley prevented himself from laughing. This lasted about 2 episodes before he couldn't take it anymore and burst out laughing).
Anyway, moral of the story is to never relent on your friends. It's for their good, and any moments of weakness or levity on your part wil only show a divided front, and they'll use that as an excuse...

For those of you who watched episode 4 and were thinking "what the hell...who is that guy, since when can Yuki use magic, and what's with Mikuru telling Kyon not to help her or 'that' will happen again", here is the true yet unhelpful explination. The anime series was made for those who read the novels, and the episode titles correspond with the novel chapters. However, those who read the novels know that "The Bordem of Haruhi Suzumiya" is actually chapter seven, whereas chapters one and two were episodes two and three (episode one being the crappy student film made by the main characters that actually gives hints as to what the main storyline is). The reason they are showing the anime episodes in the incorrect order is related to the main storyline (though I don't wanna spoil too much of it) If you wanna know exactly what's going on, PM me and I'll tell you what I know.
If you reveal any more plot points (that aren't blatently obvious, like the ones above) I will track you down and kill you.
It's bad enough that I have to wait for each episode (I hate waiting, so I usually get a whole series at once).
I think it's actaully quite awesome the way that they're screwed with the continuity, it makes more sense that way.
Well, to me it does anyway.

Damnit soske, every single time I see one of your posts I'm forced to watch the end credits for haruhi... and then the opening ones..
Friggin addictive theme songs.
Ep 5 should be subbed and torrenting in the next 24 hours if anyone's keeping score...
I know how addictive those songs are, and I'm waiting on pins and needles for a full version of the ending to be released (hopefully there will be one).
yeah that's one OST that will join my collection.
I'm also hooked on the "sentimental generation" track from school rumble ni gekki, and i've got no idea why...
I suppose the composers have done their job well...
Side noteL my flatmate, who is in the process of becoming otaku, has fallen asleep watching Eva again. I'm very tempted to combine the impending "theme song medley" with the "wake up the flatmate game"...
Episode 5 is up on youtube. Finally fills us in and picks up from ep 3. This series may ultimately save me some pain when I have to write crazy shit for Philosophy class my Firstie (senior) year.

Well, seeing as how I haven't read the novel yet still get the story, I don't think that's a problem, just remember not all episodes are in order, if you wanna know the conitnuity order without reading the mangas just pay attention to the episode previews. Kyon says the release order while Haruhi says the continuity order.
EDIT: If you wanna hear the full version of the ED, while I haven't found a download of the song itself, I did find this on YouTube.

Ah, I will be able to sleep easier knowing that I can loop that eternally whilst I slumber...
Ep 6 was quite good. I'm really hating the fact that I have to wait a week between episoes, and also the fact that some fckwit decided to "shape" my broadband after a measly 10 gig of transfers per month...
that's both ways folks...
I think my highlight so far is the preview for Ep 6 (9):
"Next week will be... *chsk chsk chsk*"
"What the hell?"
I don't know why, but I piss myself every time I hear that. There were also some pearlers in Ep 6 that I will be referencing in further posts
I loved this last ep, my favorite part being when Haruhi said Mikuru would be the first victim
Wanna see how crazy the Japanese Haruhi fans are?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhntMd5bPbc&search=we%20are%20haruhi%20pop
Yeah that reaction was so awesome...
I wonder how much more she'll be able to take of Haruhi?
I think it's Ep 3 where haruhi is sucking on her ear for no apparent reason, or when she's patting her in the maid's uniform in Ep 5... it's classic...
Quote from: "Soske"The first three episodes are currently subbed, so my question to everyone here is how many of you have converted to Haruhi-ism?
Oh you know I have. And I've found episode four as well.
Dude, Ep 6 was torrenting a couple of days ago now, you're well behind the curve...
Plus the single is torrenting, man that song is by far too addictive. Seriosuly, I'velistened to it 5 times in teh past hour.
Then agian it is 1am and things tend to go downhil between now and sunrise...
Haha.. well I havn't checked in a while.
Whilst we're on the topic, has anyone managed to get thier hands on a copy of "Bouken Desho? Desho?" ?
Whilst not as addictive as Hare Hare Yukai, I still like it.
And i'm sick of this waiting. My broadband got throtteld the other day, the torrent went form 15 minutes to 1 day. ONE FREAKING DAY!
Needless to say, I've upgraded my plan. Stupid national ISP thikning they can just make up the prices as they go along...
gendou.com has Bouken, Desho Desho?
Once again I am in your debt....
I also think that this addiction is going to be harder to kick than any previous addiction...
'Cept for maybe kiddy grade. THat show had the most awesome storyline, characters, and OST of anything I've ever wathced...
It feels like an anime adaptation of a low-budget live-action version of an anime. Cool. :D
Quote from: "Carl Horn"It feels like an anime adaptation of a low-budget live-action version of an anime. Cool. :D
I'm guessing you've only seen the first episode. Watch the others that are out, then all will become clear.
I think that we may have another convertee on our hands.
I'm starting to think that maybe Soske is getting payoffs from... someone...
I know that I'm tryign to get a few convertees here too, and the "uber broadband buyer" of all my mates, torrenting falls to me, so every thrusday I've gotta burn about 4 copies of the latest sub and post it aroudn the country...
As soon as it's licenced I'ma going to preoder. Even thinking about contacting madman (Australia's Only lincee as far as I can tell) and seeing if we can licence it here first and do a dub out here, jsut so I can geet my hands on it faster.
Always wanted to be involved in a VA recording...
Anyway, enough of that. Ep 7 should be less that 48 hours away and I've got to get to pining for it...
She doesn't pay me, she's blackmailing me with those damn pictures! I think she's done this before too...
Just don't go looking at tapeworm-like logos and gettign swallowed by a cave cricket like a certain other person that was blackmailed by her...
Now, I'll admit that it's only bee n5 minutes since I watched ep 7, but I've just got a quick question- is there some link between the VAs in Haruhi and those from FMP?
I ask only because of the Fumoffu and Second Raid references in Ep 7, and Yuki's attack looking very similar to a lambda-driver feild...
I will go to IMDB and research
EDIT:
Both IMDB and Animenfo have very little info on Haurhi, however the VAs for Soske and Kyon share the same surname: Tomokazu.
I'm not sure if it's a coincidence that the person that is trying to convert us all has this flimsly connection to Haruhi....
Tell me, when Koizume called out Fumoffu and Second Raid, did you have similar thoughts?
PS: I found out that Haruhi and Lumiere (from Kiddy Grade) share the same VA: Ayu Hirano, and that makes both series even more awesome, if that's even possible...
Kyon and Itsuki's VAs had minor roles in FMP. Though more notably, Kyon's VA was Rin, Mikuru's VA was Kaede, Kyon's Sister's VA was Lisianthus in Shuffle!. The FMP references in ep 7 were meant to be random "WTF!?" moments.
this is so wrong and i werid me OUT

shouta, the haibane.
I believe that character is some kinda of Japaneese ledgend- hte "Red Racoon Dog" that was... rather fertile...
I don't konw the detials, but it's another one of those things that seems farily normal to the Japanese, but jsut makes us all scratch our heads....
I also believe that Anabuki corp was a large building consortium, however I've not NFI why they are using Red riding hood and the Red Racoon Dog in their ads- probaably some cheerful and hopeful message for hte future of the building industry... or something.
So we finally found out what happened on the island. So what do you all think of them showing the final episode for episode 9?
wha? you mean there's only 14 episodes total?
That's crazy talk...
In any case, i have a feeling that the first "closed space" adventure will be the last episode- from what we hear in Episode 4 (7), something happened there, and I wouldn't be surprised if that something is something between kyon and haruhi- you know, the tpye of thing usually left for the end of an anime series... Plus, haruhi and Kyon were getting pretty cozy on the clifftop in episode 8 (10).. ie before they fell off... the whole thing in the cave should be ignored since we've seen haruhi doesn't care who sees her changing...
Besides, I think there is a lot of explaination still not revealed.. stuff that you would usually know by episode 10...
Like, really, what's up wiht Kyon... the fact that he doesn't have a real name instantly makes him suspicious, as does the fact that he isn't suspicous to begin with...
I'ma cooking up theories by the dozen here...
but, still, 14 eps? that can't be right, surely there's 26... c'mon... please?
And is there an english version of the manga, and is it still being serialised?
Sadly, the 14 eps thing is true because the company making the Haruhi anime will be busy with the Kanon remake (which, from what I've read, no one cares about). There is fan speculation that there will be a 2nd season, but nothing definate as of yet.
And the cave situation is interesting due to episode 2(1), where Kyon mentions that Haruhi views guys on the same level as potatoes when she was changing for gym class before the guys left the room, but in the cave she hesitated and put the wet clothes back on when she was alone with Kyon.
Yeah, that's a good point- she also hesitates in taking off her bra (but then again that could be to appease the censors).
However, that "potatoes" line was Kyon's observation...
Bummer about the 14 episodes, however I'm sure if a) the manga is still serialised, b) the series doesn't finialie things (like Excel did) and c) The already fanitic fanbase makes enough noise, then there may be a chance at a second series.
Maybe an OVA at least...
However, on the up side, it does mean that all the answers will be revealed in 6 weeks.... I'm getting slightly excited here...
Went back and watched ep 2(1) to confirm some suspiscions.
After I get ep 9(14) I will make some speculations. They're already fairly solid, however the last ep sohuld have some extra clues etc.
Anyone else want to join me in the guessing game?
Oh, I've been having speculations since Haruhi's introduction speech. I don't wanna say anything in case I'm right (which I'm pretty sure I'm not).
Yeah, As soon as I heard that I had picked the whole cast thing, and the truths behind EP 1(0).
But, since then, I have come up with a whole cascade of things.
Well, a couple.
I dunno, I'm really, really lookign forward to hte conclusion of this series, even if it is only 14 eps.
And i'ma trying to find english versions of the manga, but to no avail (yet)
if anybody is a member or regular of a site on this anime i would be prepaired to affiliate with them, if you could pass the word out
I'll keep an eye out
NONONONONONON that can't be ep 14! IT CAN'T BE!
And ep 4 is next, so that throws out a ocuple of things...
I need to find that director and slap him around... you're not allowed to do the Anno-style "suspense by doing nothing" act IF YOU'RE ONLY GONIG OT MAKE 14 FUGEN EPISODES!
And I'm not sure how much I like the cutesy Haruhi. Sure, it's nice... but it's not Haruhi...
Well... maybe...
Aw who'm i kidding. It was nice to see her act like that... kinda.. .aw shuddup

Not really..you just cold-cock her, then it'd be simple assult
C'mon- the guy's a first year computer club president who's being accosted by two cute chicks- one who's extremely hyperactive and the other who he's being forced to molest. That's not the type of person you'd expect to be assertive enough to cold-cock anyone...
Plus, as you ca nsee by ep 1(0) Haruhi probably isn't hte easiest person to take a camera off...
As to the Yuki situation... I dunno. Seems just a bit too aloof for my liking, and her boredom is a touch contagious.
And yeah, I was wrong about cute Haruhi. How could you dislike any form of Haruhi? It's just not legal.

You're very welcome. I must convert as many as I can to Haruhi-ism...cuz she keeps using that damn picture against me.
Last episode has come and gone. Sadly, the great series is over, at least for now. Any bets on how long it takes me to get withdrawl symptoms?
Another convert to Haruhi-ism, here.
Absolutely brilliant. The most engaging, original and fun series I've seen in a long time. Thanks so much for the recommendation. I loved the way they parodied just about every visual anime-style throughout the series, from space-fleet command decks, to the park-bench's hundred-different-camera-angles, to deserted classrooms bathed in red. The fragmented nature of the storyline seemed very weird for a while, but at the end it made complete sense why they did it like that. The random Full Metal Panic references in several episodes cracked me up, as I've recently been watching Fumoffu.
Seriously, everyone who hasn't checked this out yet - you'll be doing yourself a disservice if you don't. The SOS Brigade demands it!
Always nice to hear of another convert. And if anyone wants to see a timeline of the story from the novels (up to volume 7 if I recall correctly) it's currently at http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=2000121&topic=28795244 (I don't know for how long since Gamefaqs removes old threads)

Waaah. I was actually kind of reluctant to watch this one at first, because... well, Haruhi seemed kinda bitchy. ^^;; But... but then I watched the whole thing in a marathon and it's sooooooo good and now I'm reading the novels and forcing other people to watch it.
It's a good series, though I've only just got back into it. I'm on episode 11 now.

Wow, this is a really addictive series, though I had to finish it before posting here since I saw some spoilers. I've shown it to a couple people. The English major appreciates the depth of the story. The person who cracked trying to watch Perfect Blue for the first time while sleep deprived and drunk and cracked, left after the first episode clutching his head and refusing to acknowledge anymore episodes, which I expected.

A lot of people didn't watch past the "first" episode when it came out. This is when rope and duct tape come in handy.
I find that so weird though, the amount of negative comments I've read about the first episode, and even the enthusiastic reviews of the series saying "don't worry too much about the first episode, it gets much better". Both me and the friend I watched it with were in stitches throughout the whole of the first episode, and even before we'd seen any of the rest of the series, we had both agreed "Best Opening Episode EVAR". How can so many people not appreciate the beautifully crafted piss-take of bad home-made movies?
There is really something to be said for a series that has the balls to kick off with an episode that introduces precisely none of the cast members, and only shows even a glimpse of the main character in the closing few seconds. And still manages to start things on a high note :)

I, too, enjoyed the first episode, as did everyone I watched it with. The negetive comments about it make no sense to me.

yeah it was played at my university's anime club, i loved it, (oh god, the opening song), but people had mixed feelings towards it. poeple couldn't stand the randomness, and some people loved it.
well as funny as the series is thus far... the novels material yet used is even funnier. With everything happening in episode 1-5 (in the correct viewing order):02,03,10,13,14.
With all that being from the first novel, there is plenty of material yet to be used (except the stuff already used: i.e the other episodes)
the second novel, which im reading now (on the last chapter) focuses on the conception and filming of the movie seen in the first aired episode.
Which is hilarious to read.A second season is a must happen situation after reading the novels.
Yes, there is a lot of material for a second season, especially since the novel series isn't over yet. I really wanna see the episode where...
(NOVEL SPOILERS)
That one friend of Kyon's thinks he's in love with Yuki, when it's actually just he doesn't realize his esper power to locate members of the Data Entity, and Yuki decides to remove his ability (she can apparently do that). Have seen the music vids by now; still trying to find time to sort through the episode bits with the best subtitles tough. Definitely consider me an initiate of Haruhiism at least, might take a while to make full convert digging around for good subs until the official stuff crosses the bigger pond. But from the "God Knows" and ending vids alone, my opinion of this series is :D, and my expectations are 8) , 'nuff said.

Decisions decisions, that's very tempting and then there's Mikuru (http://www.animaxis.com/en/shop/product.asp?sku=141799%2D00) available on preorder. I already have a Chidori (http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/144/fumoffu1ce8.jpg) figurine which I already receive a mild amount of flack for. If I get more I'm worried it will create negative perceptions about me (unfortunately, in my line of business perception is very important even if I don't care personally).
what?...that you collect alternative action figures?

okay.... um wtf is up with this new popularity. I've been so busy that I couldn't keep up with all the new stuff, and now we got this melecholy watchamacallit. i guess I better go and You tube this mug really quick. I mean everyone is all buzzing about this new title. Well it comes out on dvd later on this year so I guess I'll just buy a copy and see how I like it. It must be something else. I promise to watch an episode on youtube later on this week. College plus Job plus a social life doesn't leave me much time to see anime ya know.
Just ordered these two figurines, probably won't get here for a while (bloody international shipping >.<)

Until today, I haven't been on the asosbrigade site for a few days. The latest poll made me chuckle, "Which character do you prefer to see in a bunny suit?"
It says this poll is for "research purposes only". (What in the world are they planning??)
My vote was for Haruhi. Mikuru would easily have gotten my vote as well though.

HARUHI-ISM HAVE SUPER LOVE COMPLETE!
Must...have...MOAR...NAO!
Seriously, this is one of the best series I've ever seen. I loved it. I actually thought the chronological mis-order was quite interesting. The broadcast episode #14 was a much more exciting ending than the chronological episode #14.
Ah, such a great series. Have the novels been released in English?

Double post!
But! I just pre-ordered this:
Schiggity-shiggity-swag! (http://www.amazon.com/Melancholy-Haruhi-Suzumiya-Special/dp/B000NVT0PM/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-5915677-2928857?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1176163513&sr=8-1)
Hopefully, the other special edition DVDs will get the 30% discount as well, but I think they are worth it anyway even at full price.
So I guess now my recent downloading of the fansubs is justified. BANZAI!
Hopefully, a lot of people will buy this and then "they" (as in whatever company does it) will translate the novels and bring them over here!
I must say, I haven't been affected like this by an anime since...well, since Excel Saga! I have to thank you Soske, for if you hadn't made this topic, I never would have watched this (when I joined this board, I was looking through this forum and I was literally like "Hey, this topic is stickied and has a lot of posts, it must be good XD). Unless of course me watching Suzumiya Haruhi was a predetermined event on this time plane...
...so...is it June yet?

I'm still undecided on getting the special edition yet. The CD alone is a nice bonus though. The music is great.
Someone brought up an interesting question at an anime/jpop/jrock music board I hang out on concerning the hair ribbon.... What use would a guy have for it. O.o Well, for myself, I don't plan on using it to look pretty! :P It would make a good bookmarker though since everytime I want one, I grab an old sales receipt... It works.
Don't laugh at me!!

Also remember that the special edition of vol 1 gets you the box, and the special editions of the other volumes will all come with cds and other goodies, (I can't wait to get my hands on the "dan chou" arm band!), as well as extra DVDs with sub-only broadcast-order of eps.
Well, the dan chou band is unisex, so I'm definitely wearing that. As for the ribbon...I'll probably just wear it for laughs.
I can't wait to see all the extra footage that will be on the remastered DVDs (animation fixes, unaired segments, etc.).
By the way, how many of you out there learned the full Hare Hare Yukai dance? I taught myself Haruhi's part by getting an AVI and flipping it so it would be a mirror version. I only really practiced for like...2 hours before I got the moves down. I just need to work on my ending spin!
Ah, I'm glad someone finally posted here. I've been feeling really left out like I had missed the boat since I came in so late and it seems no one here wants to talk about it anymore.
BTW, Baka-tsuki has just updated the prologue of Vol. 9 to 5%! I must go off now and read (it's gone from 2 lines to about a page and a half (depending on the size of your monitor))
Oh, I'll be talking about it plenty when the DVD is released.
Though, I've seen the previews of the English dub, and un-like a certain other favorite series of mine, Bandai seems to actually be doing a good job with Haurhi. (although Bandai made up for their HiME folly a tiny bit by having Vol. 7 come with that great looking set box)
Quote from: "I'M Eh-chan!"By the way, how many of you out there learned the full Hare Hare Yukai dance?
Speaking of which....
Has anyone seen this yet?
A group of cosplayers got together in Akihabara, Tokyo for a fun time of dancing to Hare Hare Yukai. Everyone had a blast.
But things got kinda scary when the police showed up... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okeq0uuldy0)
LOL! Yeah, that was hilarious! There are other videos of that too and one of them was successful.
That's so awesome. I'd just love to break out into spontaneous HHY over here!
I've only just watched the first episode so now the question is
when is it out?
this is so funny and thats good
May 29th (in the US), Vol 1 will be released in both regular edition and special edition. Volume 1 will contain 4 episodes: The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00 and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya I, II, and III. Regular edition will contain just the DVD, while special edition will contain the DVD, box, pencil board, cosplay ribbon, iron-on logo, and Hare Hare Yukai CD.
Outside of the Japanese releases, this is the only date that has been announced thus far, but I'll keep you informed as soon as I hear any other dates, especially for the R2 releases.
P.S.: Welcome to the S.O.S. Brigade new convert!

someone answer my question with a very logical response. Plz do not just spam out. BECAUSE ITS AWESOME or somethign like that even if it is. Why do you guys like this so much?
First things first:
Everyone has different tastes. So I may not be able to convince you to run out and buy the limited edition, nor do I require you to run out and buy the limited edition.
I will, however, tell you why Haruhi is so special for me:
The story. The story is absolutely fabulous. This series is based on an ongoing series of light novels by Tanigawa Nagaru. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu is a sci-fi, comedy, school life, supernatural series. What's most important is it successfully combines all of these elements into one series. For me, it is a very fresh and exciting story. The humor is top-par as well. Here is a basic plot premise from AnimeNewsNetwork.com:
On the first day of high school a beautiful girl named Haruhi Suzumiya introduces herself as having "no interest in ordinary humans". She asks for any aliens, time travelers, sliders or espers to join her. Watching her weird behaviour is Kyon who sits in front of Haruhi and is the only person who talks to her. When Kyon comments about Haruhi's joining every club in school and then quitting he unwittingly gives Haruhi an idea to start her own after school club. Thereafter Kyon and several others find themselves dragged, literally, into the Save our world by Overloading it with fun Suzumiya Haruhi's Brigade (the S.O.S. Brigade for short). The characters. Each character has their own unique traits and personalities, and I really can't say that there are any characters I hate. Kyon's sarcastic wit and observations are hilarious. He is an excellent narrator. All of the other characters are superb as well. I feel I can really relate to Haruhi and find many of my traits in her. And the voice acting is great. Each voice seems to really fit the character.
The presentation. This show was originally aired anachronistically (out-of-order). It was a wonderful experience. Each new episode would give you hints as to the overall picture, and it was left up to you to piece things together yourself. Unfortunately, the regular editions of the DVD releases will be in chronological order. Broadcast order DVDs are included with the special editions, though. Either way, it is a great series that can be enjoyed no matter which order you watch it.
The animation. Kyoto Animation has done a superb job animating this series. A lot of attention is paid to details, and the episodes were practically reviewed frame-by-frame to be cleaned up for the DVD release. Facial expressions, body language, everything is well done.
The music. This may just be a personal preference, but I love the music. The BG, the OP and ED, and the insert songs were wonderful. The music choices for some of the biggest scenes in the show are so well chosen I get chills watching them.
So that's what I think of the show and why I think it's great. You'll have to decide for yourself whether it is the series for you, though. It is hard to describe in words. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu is definitely a show that needs to be seen to understand.
sounds interesting  Thanks a bunch Eh-Chan. Lol, you gave me a better review then most proffessionals I see on other internet sites.
Hee hee, you're welcome Kenshin. Glad I could help :exhail:
Wait, why was this stickied?
Oh well, I'll leave it.
I think it got stickied because way back before we had that attack, it was auto deleted, and someone probably asked about it or the series was talked about or something. Then when the site was rolled back, the topic came back and got stickied. That's my theory for it anyways.
only a few more days till you convert to haruhi-ism. I hope that its good.
I was thinking about converting but I dunno. We'll see.
Apparently the anime is already out at animecastle.com as well as animecornerstore.com and has been out for some time. I know the release date is the 29th but I guess it is getting out sooner. Has anyone gotten a copy of the dvd yet?
Got my copy yesterday. As suprised as I am to be saying this, the voice acting is pretty good. The SE box art is nice too.
Quote from: "Soske"The SE box art is nice too.
It really is. There's artwork everywheres on it. One of the nicest done in anime boxsets I have.
I just got my copy of it yesterday. It wasn't even a preorder either. Wasn't expecting to find it at all. I walked into HMV and saw the regular copies of volume 1 on the rack.
Thing is, there's this drawer under the rack which pulls open with all kinds of goodies under there! And lo and behold, there was the special edition literally screaming at me, "Buy me! Bye me now, damn it!" O_O
This is really an incredible package though. The magnetic door on the box was a nice touch.
I'm curious though. Wasn't there supposed to have been a red SOS Brigade armband included with this, or am I just imagining things? O.o hmm... Maybe not as the package gives no mention of it.

The red armband comes with the Vol. 2 SE box.
Ah, I see. Thank you for that, Soske.
I knew I read somewheres like Amazon or something that the red armband would be included eventually. I may wear it at the next con I go to for laughs. ^^
Had a busy week, but I finally watched vol.1 yesterday.
As Soske pointed out, the english voice acting is pretty good. But Crispin Freeman doing Kyon's voice is not what I'd consider a perfect match for the character. It's not that he's horrible, but I don't think he has Kyon's mannerisms down properly. He doesn't quite convey Kyon's disgust with Haruhi's demands with enough.... oomph into it.
I'm up to Ep. 9, found a good place online to watch the whole series, in addition to lots of other stuff, and I can definitely say that I am considering buying the series. The non-sequential nature of the series is a bit hard to grasp at first but I can see why they did it. Once I finish the series I will see if the whole is worth the purchase, but I get the feeling it will be. I have no opinion on the dub since the version I've been watching is completely sub, so I'll have to at least check out the DVDs to see what that is like.
i just finished the series online and i gotta say that it is great. However, I just wish that the show didn't have to end. I believe there could be so much more stuff to it as it is still fresh. Well, all great things need to come to an end. This is something I need to learn Japanese for.
I've been hearing a lot of stuff circulating about a second series of Haruhi happening at some point. It's nothing I can confirm, so don't anyone get your hopes up just yet!
The last I heard, they were planning on making a 2nd season in the fall, though now that may get pushed back. I'm sure that there will be a second season, maybe even a third or fourth, since there is a lot of story from the novels left to be animated.
^We can certainly hope so. This series didn't just happen to take the world by storm for nothing. It was a really fun story coupled with such likable characters. There is far too much potential (and too great of a fanbase) to just leave it at a mere fourteen episodes. It seems inevitable that another wave of Haruhi-ism, in animated form, is on the horizon. And just like before, it will spread like wildfire.
Can't wait for vol. 2 to hit the stores next month.
i'll agree with you there. The movers and shakers as well as the big wigs won't let this series die and want to keep the money flowing....... but the small wigs wont do anything.
They obviously only scratched the surface with this series, thus I can't believe they would let it go, especially as mentioned before the novels can be farmed for far more. And 14 episodes is way too short - at least one more season, if not two. And now I'm not personally familiar with the novels this is based on, but I assume they are light novels? If that is the case, FMP has managed to get some great longevity from their light novel origins, and they will also likely have more coming out. I imagine Haruhi can do that as well.
Okay, picked up Vol. 1 the other day and watched it through in English and Sub, and I was rather disappointed. It was still Haruhi, but while I didn't full on hate the English Dub, I don't favor it and Kyon in the Dub didn't have that same disgusted flair that he did in the original Japanese. And I didn't really like the Dubbed Haruhi either, so then I watched the official sub and again was somewhat disappointed. I actually thought the fan subbing was better, there were some lines that were altered that just didn't fit right in the official sub. One example is when Haruhi bursts into the room with a loud "Ya-hoo!" (which sounds really cute in Japanese), and Kyon is like "yahoo?", but in the official sub they have here saying "Yoo-hoo", which it doesn't sound like at all and has a completely different meaning. I'll still buy the lot, but I was hoping for a little more. The studios need to find some of these fansubbers and bring them on board, I think they put a little more love and attention into the work in many cases.
I got Vol. 2, and IMO it's worth it just for the armband (which I plan to wear in my Linux class tomorrow morning ^^).
Quote from: "ElricJC"Kyon in the Dub didn't have that same disgusted flair that he did in the original Japanese.
So far I've had little problem with most with the exception of Kyon. As I've said before, I don't think Crispin Freeman voices Kyon horribly, but he doesn't quite have his mannerisms down properly.
Maybe he'll improve in Vol. 2? O.o
Quote from: "ElricJC"The studios need to find some of these fansubbers and bring them on board, I think they put a little more love and attention into the work in many cases.
Definately. I'm amazed at the attention they give to every aspect of a story. They go above and beyond.
And in some cases, some of the fandubbers I've had the rare occasion of hearing deserve to be employed to do what they do professionally.
Quote from: "Soske"I got Vol. 2, and IMO it's worth it just for the armband (which I plan to wear in my Linux class tomorrow morning ^^).

Seems to be a situation with supply and demand for volume 2 of Haruhi Suzumiya. At least here anyways.
Special edition volume 2 was ordered in June at my local HMV and was promised for a July 4th release. At two weeks into August now, I'd say it's just a little bit late. X_x They're also experiencing some difficulty getting the regular edition as well.
At this rate, vol. 3 might be released here before the pre-orders of vol. 2 are met. :e_shocked:
Noooooooo...
Uh huh, I'm in the same boat. Annoying, innit?
^Yes! :e_wink:
Aside from me ranting about it, I had also wondered if anyone else was experiencing the same availability woes as me.
Glad I'm not in the boat all by myself here.
*UPDATE*
It appears as though the dry spell for more Haruhi-ism is slowly lifting.
Got a call from HMV saying it finally arrived. Yayy!

Wearing it at Anime North next year would be a given. But that's long ways off.
I suppose... hmmm... If I were to wear it to work this Monday morning and bellow out,
"I have no interest in ordinary humans. If there are any aliens, time travelers, sliders, or ESPers here...... come join me. That is all!", do you think it might get me fired on the spot? :icon_lol:

The unbridled power of anime.

But no, I'd feel too weirded-out to use it. It is cute though. It features Nagato, Suzumiya, and Asahina.
I've never actually seen this show, but I want to. I've heard the episodes were shown out of order or something (like what happened with Firefly), so I have a question:
What order should I watch the episodes in?
Also, which is better, the dub or the subbed version? I normally prefer dubs, just to let you know.
Thank you.
Personally, I've never first watched the series out of order as they aired it in Japan. Watching it out of order will feel similar to something like the way Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni was made (if you've seen it); Basically a lot will be in different story arcs in which you'll tie everything together later on.
Only my opinion, but I'd say to watch it in order. For continuity's sake.
If you do prefer dubs then give this a shot. For the most part, I'd say they did a reasonably good job on this one.
Crispin Freeman still continues to bug me as the voice of Kyon... but heck, could've been a far worse choice made.
Are the episodes in the correct order on the DVDs?
In chronological order, yep.
If you decide on getting the limited editions, they'll include an extra disc with the original TV broadcast order (subbed only).
'ere's my pillow case included in vol.3. Maybe you'll know why I'm reluctant to use it. :icon_lol:
Yep, I do now.
Actually, I think watching the show in aired order the first time is better (better ending that way).
I'll give it a go both ways as to get the full effect, then. :elhail:
I just recently heard that, in the grand tradition of the Japanese porn industry, that a live action porno called "Suzumiya Hahiru no yuuutsu" has been made. Google it and you'll see some of the commentary made by fans. Christ, and apparently the company that made this also made one called Faith/Stay Night (yup, a porn parody of Fate/Stay Night as well).
So to those who made this film a possibility, I give them this :excel_fall:
love the series, probly will get the manga now and light novel (if its avaliable) but pissed at the shortness of the series and the inconclusiveness of it despite its popularity...
Why on earth would the DVDs put them in chronological order? That's the worst possible thing they could've done to the series. Do they think we're too stupid to handle a little lack of continuity? Most of the fans who wanted the series so badly already watched it in the non-chronological order in subs! :lordilvryannoyed:

...okay, in all honesty, I think episode 1 is pretty terrible, even after reading the novel it was based off of. It is kind of neat the amount of detail they packed into that one episode (it's REALLY close to the book), but like... no. Lame episode.
I wish the novels were in english or would be translated into english to read. But guess with more episodes coming out it will be alright. But I always like reading the source material to see if I missed anything.

I was also wondering, is there honestly any difference (in the actual dvd content) between the dvd sets? Im sure the material stuff is dif but what about the dvds?
The difference is that the last 3 LE DVDs come with an extra disc which show the episodes in aired order, sub titles only. Hence, DVD content isn't a reason to get the LE versions, the armband and other assorted stuff are.
I watched the first epidsode...but I'm confused. And my brain imploded...on the really eipisope one!
xD
^Your brain imploded?
That's always a good sign. :e_tongue:
Recently found out that the final limited edition vol.4 will have another different pillowcase included.
Sooo... wow.... hmm.... what to do with the other pillowcase.. :icon_lol:
Hmm I just finished the novel series and now im slightly worried about how the anime will go.
The 9th volume splits the story, unlike how we all know the story in that it may skip parts and come back to them later. Volume 9 just completely divides up taking everything it happened so far into 2 dif directions.
Makes me wonder how they will pull this off in the anime....
I showed the Hare Hare Yukai dance to myself a few weeks ago.
And now she has learned it and does it all the time.
She's planning on going to Nerbaskcon as Nagato. And she hasn't seen the anime and doesn't have any idea what it's about! D:

Lol wait tell u get to volume 4, which I feel is the best storyline of the series =D
Okay, I'll probably get lynched for this post, but here goes.
I recently finished this series. Yeah, it was funny, the animation was good, the story was... different, and the characters were interesting. But, I will not lie, I found the theme song to be completely terrible and extremely annoying. Other than the OP, I thought it was pretty good, and worthy of a 7, or even possibly an 8, out of 10. But, honestly, what's so great about the show? I watched the whole thing, laughing occasionally, but could never really understand what people find so amazing about it.
Of course, my "tastes" in anime are quite peculiar compared to most of this forum's users (and even the internet in general). I thought that Lucky Star was boring, unfunny trash that got by on cuteness alone, and that Elfen Lied was nothing more than over-hyped, glorified guro lolicon with uninteresting characters and a cookie-cutter story.
I'm not saying this to bash any of the shows, or their respective fans, I'm simply stating my opinion. However, if anyone would like to tell me why The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is so great, I'd be glad to hear your opinion.

The novels are extremly good. Also the anime itself just had many good qualities you dont find in anime. I can understand why you wouldnt like the song, since your not a J-pop fan. But all songs for the series were done by the real voice actor for the series, which is pretty damn impressive and amazing (ive yet to find any other anime that does that. Well there is Family Guy, but thats not anime). Also the quality of the art was constant and very well done. Their was a solid storyline. They used a unique style to broadcast the show. I mean it was just a good anime all in all. Also Haruhi Suzumiya is a person that gives people a little hope. By that I mean she keeps dreams alive that we all long give up on life and people see that and rekindle that lost hope a little. She gives people a chance to dream again even if its just a little bit. But yeah read the novels

Take note, I wasn't stating that I didn't like the series, just that I didn't think it was worth as much praise as it received.
But since you say that the novels are better, I'll definitely get around to reading them soon. ^__^
It will take some time to read em all. You might find it boring at first because the anime really did follow the first book and its short stories well.
After scouring eBay, I purchased all four Limited Editions, for a whole $5 less then they would have cost had I bought them at Best Buy. I am very glad I bought the Limited Editions, especially for the SOS arm-band. I want to use the t-shirt transfers, but I know after a few washes, they will look terrible. I will frame the pillowcases, as I would never use such a thing for its intended purpose. I actually thought about putting on the yellow hair band/ribbon, but I get uncomfortable in drag, after what happened last time...
So far, I have watched the original televised order DVDs. This is the first time that I have watched an animé in Japanese first (doing something new and differently is fitting for this series, really). I thoroughly enjoyed it, and am looking forward to watching it again in English, in order.
I eagerly anticipate the continuation of this series, and will one day learn all the steps to the Hare Hare Yukai dance. Does anyone know of a site that has it broken-down into the actual steps and motions?

There was a group that translated them on the net quite awhile ago, releasing the novels in PDF format. Probably could get a torrent or something for it.
I haven't gotten around to reading them yet XD
I like Haruhi... and to me, it seems like most the people that hate it don't have any very good reasoning other than that it's so popular. How lots of things seem to be >_>; "Dude, this show is awesome!" then "God, everyone likes it and it sucks so much!". Damn conforming anti-conformists
Watched the first 4 episodes and I will say it certainly the best and funniest anime apart from excel saga I have seen for a long time.
I quite like the episode where haruhi uses her negotiating skills (blackmail) to obtain a computer, very funny, felt sorry for mikuru though

Pure gold it was.

You've gotta be kidding me, bland? What kind of special acid are you on? Can I have some? It doesn't go full-tilt all the time, they take a moment to build on ideas or the plot, but to say that this show is bland is ridiculous. What is your reasoning behind this "bland" label?
Lan the disbeliever, haruhi is one of the better anime I have seen for along time apart from excel saga and lucky star, and yes I found the first 6 episodes a little strange, but its better than the mind fuck you get when you watch evangelion, especially since the last 2 episodes don't really make much sense.
Bland like white rice?
Or more like a tofu kind of bland? :e_tongue:
The Haruhi anime has been described as many things but I can't recall anyone describe it as "bland". :il_hahaha:
Eva wasnt a mind fuck after all. It all makes sense. Watch it all in one week like I did, and you realise everything.
As you can tell from my picture, I love NHK which I finished watching before starting Haurhi, and it wasnt bland, as I could relate to it on sooo many scales. Tenchi Muyo isnt bland because so much stuff is going on.
Yeah, Haruhi SO FAR anyway, is bland. Defo!
All I see happening is a guy who talks to himself inside his head, surrounded by really interesting characters, but most of the time they just sit around.
OK, take it like this-
This series was like the calm before the storm, but with no storm at the end.
Thats why it NEEDS a second series! Im expecting time travel related stories, god related stories, reasons for life and death stuff, life in death stories, and a matrix type idea. All for this one anime. It didnt deliver.
EDIT-
As for my 'special acid', well that would be the animes mentioned above, but add LAIN to the mix. That anime was just epic!
Don't give mme that shit about evangelion of course it was a mind fuck, it started okay and went completey wierd towards the end and the two movies that manga entertainment released doesn't not forgive the fact that eva was a mind fuck session, and any haruhi is much better.
If you want mindfuck watch the first 2 Ghost in the Shell movies. But speaking on Haruhi....it was ok, but it just doesn't seem to have the watchability of other anime's of its ilk. I feel i could watch Lucky Star or completely different, Black Lagoon, over and over again. Whereas with Haruhi....i don't know it was a bit like Full Metal Panic season one....ive watched it, may buy it on DvD but won't really watch it again any time soon.

I know where you are coming from here, but I would rate Haruhi slightly higher than FMP season 1 - I rewatche Haruhi once in a great while, but not as often as Black Lagoon, Rune Soldier, FMP: TSR, or Abenobashi. Any anime that has a sense of mystery or build up tends to be less watchable in the longrun - like Ghost in the Shell, I only rewatch that once in a while too. But I haven't watched FMP season 1 in a while, though I do own it.
Though I will say I tend to watch Haruhi eps 3 & 4 a lot simply for the hilarity of Mikuru's introduction, which is hilarious, especially with the computer club.

There's going to be a second season? Wow, this just made my day :g_hail:
There is no word on it, but there has got to be in some point in the future. I think the only recent news was about the same anime studio working on something else, so if anything, its not going to be anytime soon.
I dont want to keep bringing it up, but I just want to clarify that I thought Eva was a mind fuck for years upon years, until very recently when I watched the whole thing again (this being probably the 5th rewatch), and realising that the story is all there after all. Basically, TV 25+26 happen during the movie when Shinji is inside the Eva, but also inside giant Rei.
Shinji asks questions like 'what is the difference between reality and dreams', and he is asking this after experiencing his made up happy world that we see in TV26.
At the very end though, people can come back to life if they wish. I know this isnt told directly, but we know this as Shinji did JUST THAT in the TV series, when he turned from LCL back to human again.
The reason Rei brought Asuka back to life was to keep Shinji company. After all there is the possibility that everyone may NOT want to come back into the land of the living. But its still a fact that they can if they wish.
PM me if you want my full explanation. :P
Shinji was to determine mankind's fate... first he wanted everyone gone, but then he realized mankind isn't so bad so he changed his mind decided to just start everything over. So basically the LCL at the end is the sea from which life will come again. That's what I believe.
I love Eva.... a lot.
This is off-topic though. As for Haruhi... I've seen like 4 or 5 episodes. Didn't grab me too much.
Expect why did shinji try to strangle asuka at the end before she touched his face huh?, and when is series 2 coming out of haruhi, when oh when and oh when
Because he was screwed up in the head, because he couldnt justify everything he had just experienced. Her touching his face made him snap out of it.
As for the 1st time round before 3rd impact, he strangled her because she was ticking him off. She almost asked for it really (but she was attention seeking deep down).

I've watched it a few times, and always find it entertaining. My friend Paul didn't get into it so much. He's willing to watch anything I recommend, and rarely dislikes the choices. He thought it was interesting, and I can see how it can get a little tedious, or even confusing, if you're not familiar with it.

The first volume of the manga has just been released anyone picked it up yet? ANN gave it a bad review so I'm not too sure if I want to spend money on it considering I own the anime and the novels are gonna be released (right?)
ANN didn't give a bad review to the manga version.
They eviscerated it o.O;;. They gutted it, laid its entrails out on the table, jumped up and down on them, pissed in the gaping cavity, and then turned it into hamburger. I haven't agreed with everything they have said, but that review is definitely enough to keep me away from the manga. I will wait for the novels.
^Wow.. That bad, huh? O.O
If by chance I can find a copy of the manga around here, I'll let y'all know what I think.
That's right. I said "y'all". :il_hahaha:

Did some checking at Anime News Network (they usually know about this stuff first than most sources) and even they don't have two clues to rub together as to when the second season of the Haruhi anime is going to happen. O.o
Amid all the rumors and constant speculation about it coming out this year, it's safe to say it's not happening for now.
But I would bet that a greater chance of a release will happen sometime in '09. And if it doesn't happen early '09, we probably won't be able to buy it here 'til 2010.
I am no good at japanese but I looked at what I assumed was the official site, something about 2009, but what? could it be the new series, ova or something else
^Was it Kyoto Animation's site? I saw something there about a 2009 Haruhi calendar available among a few other things.
I can't wait until the novels are released :elhail: Yen Press has the rights to it and to the higurashi manga (but tears because as far as I know no one has picked up the kyo kara maoh novels)
but I'm getting off topic, I'm suprised there's no info about a second season. You think such a popular series would have some.
Aw man, Oubliette Guy doesn't like Haruhi. Too bad.
He says he doesnt like the character designs.
If you own this series, live in the uk and are fed up with it take it to you local CEX shop
Sorry, dudes, I just watched the series and it didn't do much for me.
There are only four discs, right? There's not some great final climax I've missed? (Anyway, our library system only owns up to Disc 4... )

Yeah, 14 episodes, that's all of them.
And I agree, there is nothing really special about this series. Kyoto Animation animates really well, but that's all I like about their anime. Haruhi Suzumiya light novels were a lot more enjoyable, in my opinion.

Haruhi is currently being repeated on Japanese TV in the correct order, and apparently afterwards its going to show 14 new episodes!! could this be an April fools though??
no it's true Haruhi is recieving a second series (it's to popular XD)

No offence to Haruhi fans here, but COME ON! The anime is BLAND BLAND BLAND BLAND!
There NEEDS to be a second series just to kick start this series into something I wont fall asleep too!
and thats what they did. News flash folks, NEW HARUHI EPISODE AIRED ALREADY!!! If they keep inserting new episodes into the original series like this, all will be forgiven. Never in a million years was it intended to be 14 episodes long.
Bland ja nai! ^_^

New ending credits already uploaded to You Tube-

^Looks like the real deal alright.
And yes, apparently this new episode known as "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody" was aired very sneakily within the re-running of the first season. And a lil Googling revealed that it was so hush-hush that television stations airing it were asked not to reveal advance details of the airing. O_o Crazy, I tell you.
So the question is how Kadokawa is going to handle the airing of future new episodes. Will they continue to sneak 'em in like this? Kinda seems like their game plan.
Edit: There are about a dozen Raws of this episode on YouTube now.
Not really an action oriented episode. Appears to be some amount of time travel stuff happening. That's all I'll say at this point. ^^
im sort of expecting the fan subs to be availible sometime today. some people say it could break a new record from airing to fansub. maybe tonight i will be watching it??
edit-
its up at fansub.tv *goes watch it*
*EDITED- for correct episode order sequence, see most recent page*
Just watched the fansub, that was funny, and began to tie together some strings, but just a little.
i know there are currently 9 novels availible, but roughly how many episodes should there be from this content?
The new episode "Endless Eight" has aired, with the new beginning intro-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DUXaf9AtwI&feature=response_watch
Next week's will be the conclusion to Endless Eight. I don't see why they showed this weeks(it wasn't in the novel, I get why they showed it, but they could've used it to make Bamboo Leaf a 2 parter so that a lot of the skipped details could've been shown) but what can ye do?
to be honest this weeks was a total waste of time. completely boring and bland. so what, they ran around doing little things here and there over summer? big deal...
the bamboo leaf episode a few weeks back was great. can you tell me what they missed out from the novel?
I probably worded it wrong, but basically, they never skipped anything, but a lot of Kyon's thoughts(I can't remember what they were) and Kyon and Koizumi's conversations(again, I can't remember, long time ago) were cut short. In fact, a LOT of stuff was cut short or rushed because they were trying to fit too much into 30 minutes. I mean it probably didn't warrant 2 episodes, but it certainly should've filled more than one. They could've just had the part with Kyon and Asahina in after it. I won't go into it just in case they show it at another point.
But yeah, Endless Eight was meant to be like it was last week, but with a different ending. It does make sense to have this weeks as it was, but I didn't see why they did it, as overall it was a pretty poor episode. I assume next week will be the proper Endless Eight.
I watched that episode on-line, not bad, but as you say could have been better.
Man, I can't believe they've made it a three parter. This means that other episodes are probably gonna shortened as well.
Well, at least this weeks episode puts last weeks in context. But really, I do think some of this story should have been in last weeks episode. A nice 2 parter, not 3 parts.
Well neither this week's or last week's part were in the novel. The novel basically only showed the "last rotation" if you will.

I agree. I'm sorry to say the second new episode did nothing for me. Felt too much like an unnecessary filler episode.
Still, I'm optimistic that better episodes are on the way.
Someone said that the main story from this series is Disappearance. If that is true, then we're in for a good one.
Is there any idea on how many episodes there are going to be
I think they said 28 episodes, so I assume that it's gonna be 14 like last series since they're obviously including the first series in the showing.

Haruhi Suzumiya Anime Officially Posted in English subs on YouTube (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-06-29/haruhi-suzumiya-anime-officially-posted-in-english-on-youtube)
Even though it's only for this week and 8 episodes, (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=AA844FB687BA335E) this is a very surprising move from Kadokawa Anime.
I know what they're trying to do, get you to empathise with Nagato, but this is just annoying. Two was bad enough, but this is getting beyond the joke.
I know Disappearance is a long way off, but honestly, there's lots of other short stories that they could've used to fill the space that this is taking up.
This series can go f*** itself. What an entire waste of my time this episode was. Tell me, just WHAT DID THIS EPISODE ACHIEVE THAT THE LAST EPISODE DIDNT??!?!?! This episode showed NOTHING new. 100% nothing new!!!!!! F*** YOU HARUHI!!
edit-
ok seriously, what the hell is this series about? are the novels just wasted potential? i know the author hasn't worked on the next volume in many years now. So maybe even he has given up? why create a story that cant possibly fail and yet not even have what it takes to create something amazing?!
This series is acting like the calm before a storm, but without a storm on the horizon. I'm expecting epic time travel related stories, god related stories, reasons for life and death stuff, life in death stories, all sorts of ideas all for this one anime/novel series, but its not delivering!
whats worse, its boring!!
Well the thing is, Disappearance is a pretty goddamn good story, they just seem to be wasting episodes on a story that was the same length as the baseball story. The only thing I can think of is that they enjoy torturing us.
I haven't started S2 yet. Can anyone explain what is so angering about it? D:

I am wondering the same thing, but at least when I watch them I can go into them blissfully ignorant of the original story material. However, filler is filler, and if they are shitting out filler at the very beginning of the new season, that does not bode well.
In my opinion, the novels were truly great and in theory they would make an absolutely great anime. Somehow they skip over the really good stories, mix up the chronological order for some reason and tone everything down to make a really boring series.
It seems like all they focus on are backgrounds and paying for Aya Hirano - whose voice acting i don't really like. I don't like how they downplay violent or meaningful scenes with the background music either. Plus, having conversations which take up most of the screen time makes for an anime I wouldn't watch more than twice.
So, for the short version - it's a anime made from a riveting book which only used the material which couldn't possibly fail. The problem with that is this: The show treats itself like it the best thing ever and doesn't try to gain affection. The fans just play into it. In truth - just read the books.
The only reason I would watch is to visually see how some scenes play out.
That's the thing though, Disappearance is ideal for anime, and should be really exciting, but we're being delayed by them playing out episode after episode of Endless Eight.

Ever see that movie with Bill Murry, "Groundhog Day"? Season two episodes 2 to 4 (Endless Eight) are basically the same idea here..
[Spoiler Alert!] (in a nutshell) - Haruhi unconsciously creates a time loop because she's somehow feeling unfulfilled from her two weeks of Summer vacation. Despite doing everything she wanted with her friends, it's just not quite enough. August 17th to the 31st repeat over and over creating an endless Summer. Yuki is the only one who remembers every bit of this phenomenon. But from episode 3, Kyon is getting a lot of deja vu happening and finally is made to realize that he somehow has the power to alter this time loop from repeating further - He just needs to finally do it.
[/End Spoiler Alert!]Geeze.... gods are certainly troublesome at times, huh? :il_hahaha:

Yeah, you have to wonder. But it's kinda feeling like a sick joke now with the number of episodes they're playing this out on. Two episodes would have sufficed and then finally resolving the time loop by episode 3..

Is there really going to be a 6th episode of this travesty? i think they should rename the series to The Melancholy of Watching Haruhi Suzumiya
BTW- Wow! Look at that interesting angle! Wow, another artistic slant! wow! another one!
I know for a fact I'll still watch next week, and that is probably the worst part. I'd probably be better off just going and headbutting a wall or something.
Well this series seems to have taken a major dump and then rolled around in it, hasn't it? This is pathetic - definitely not going to buy the boxed set when half the episodes are all the same crap.

Indeed. This Endless Eight arc is extremely wasteful to the 2nd season - it's too damn long. I can't imagine what Kyoto Animation was thinking with this. It's as though they're purposely digging their own grave.
Then again, I've never read the manga so I don't know how justified they are in playing this arc out as long as they are.

This was planned from the beginning, according to Yamamoto (ex-KyoAni director who worked on the first season of Haruhi and the first four episodes of Lucky Star). He also claims that he was against it the whole time, but they fired him, so he couldn't do anything when the time came.
The chapter in the book was aboot the same length as the baseball chapter, Lord Il. Time never recurred, you only got the final time. Really, it should have been one episode if it followed the book.
.... dear god..... This is unbelievable. :il_hahaha:
There are no words for this. O_o

Wild out-of-left-field theory time.
Endless 8, 8 is the month of August, obviously, next month is August. There's 2 weeks(well, one now, as it's already been on Japanese TV) left of Haruhi until we reach August, and that will take us up to 8 episodes where it will FINALLY end.
So yeah, what I'm saying is, tomorrow's is gonna be another waste of time, next week's is gonna be the end of the punishment.
Or they could make me out to be an idiot. Won't be the first time, but I figure I'd give it a shot.
im starting to think that way too. i guess they want to put a new spin on why its called the name it has.

The brilliant assheads at Kyo Ani keep pounding the nail into the coffin of Haruhi. What a short life she lived. It doesn't really matter if the last half of this season is brilliant, who is going to buy the set with these turdisodes weighing it down.
Oh well, more money I save to spend on worthier series.

You have to wonder if this is all part of a plan.
The popularity of Haruhi Suzumiya went through the roof and beyond which probably far exceeded their expectations at the time. Perhaps it was decided they didn't wish to feel an obligation to continue beyond this second season in order to concentrate their efforts on other projects. Even so, it's a pretty strange move to purposely kill off such an obvious money making title.
However, the problem in my theory is why Kyoto would further fuel popularity of Haruhi through Lucky Star the way they did. O_o
But perhaps this is just a case of very,
VERY poor directing.

For those board of this never ending pile of shite, I'm giving out the link to the fan translated chapter from the novel, where you can finally read how it ends. I for one was a bit disappointed. After all these episodes, you would expect a mind blowing epic for an ending, but alas, its not.

Well, if their goal was to drive the short lived series into the ground as soon as humanly possible then they've done a bang-up job of it. 83% of the fucking season is the same episode arc so far everyone here hates with a passion. I tried watching it again. Then I got angry, knowing it really wasn't going to get better, went to the store, bought the complete set of The Twelve Kingdoms, and am now much happier for it.
I would agree that this new series aint much cop, as matter of fact I would probably not buy this if it came out in the uk on dvd
lol, this is friggin hilarious!
this is what it will look like in a few weeks-
1) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya I.
2) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya II.

4) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya IV.
5) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya V.

10) Remote Island Syndrome (Part 1).
11) Remote Island Syndrome (Part 2).
12) Endless Eight (Part 1).
13) Endless Eight (Part 2).
14) Endless Eight (Part 3).
15) Endless Eight (Part 4).
16) Endless Eight (Part 5).
17) Endless Eight (Part 6).
18) Endless Eight (Part 7).
19) Endless Eight (Part 8).
20) Endless Eight (Part 9).
21) Endless Eight (Part 10).

25) Live Alive.
26) The Day Of Sagittarius.
27) Someday In The Rain.
*EDITED- for correct episode order sequence, see most recent page*
Why are they doing this? To Kyon's viewpoint, he feels like he only did it once and since he's the narrator, you'd think they'd follow him! What about the disapearance of haruhi suzumiya? Are they scrapping it?
Best thing ive seen all week-

^ Oh lawd the Hitler paradies are funny.
Umm... IT's probably too late and maybe stupid to ask this, but what's the deal with this whole Haruhi craze anyway? I've never heard of it until I saw this posting and I've developed the assumption it was a really sweet series that is now nothing but an over-milked money making tool that's pissing off fans.
Could someone offer me a link or explanation? Thanks.

It's very... average, in my opinion. Worth watching, but not as great as everyone else says.
The new season is a piece of shit where they aired the exact same episode 6 times in a row, going on 7.
this crap will end today. thank god for that.

I was amused after Yamamoto felt he had a need to apologize for the poor quality of season 2 when everyone went
"D'awwwww...." :il_hahaha:
So this arc is going to finally end in episode 9? Except for a few bits and pieces, I haven't watched much beyond episode 4. Seems too much like a waste of time.
Edit: That Hitler parody is epic. EPIC, I tell you!!!
If only Kyon had done this in the beginning of the Endless Eight mess..
Course doing such a thing to Haruhi would have serious repercussions. The earth would likely implode... among other things.
It's... it's... finally over? I was right that'd go for 8 episodes? Man, I don't think I've ever been right before. :p
But seriously, thank god for that, I'd stopped watching the last few weeks(thank god for new Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, unless I'd've had nowt to watch) through sheer frustration, hopefully we can get some GOOD episodes now.

Scary thing is, it was nearly nine. The repetition finally ceased toward the end of the episode when Kyon finally grew balls to end it.
Still hafta wonder what would've happened if Kyon punched her instead. lmao!!
Let's face it, it certainly would've broken the cycle.

After so much shit hitting the fan with the Endless Eight arc, Kyoto Animation had better have one hell of a rabbit up their sleeve to help redeem the rest of season 2.
IMO, they just about killed it at this point..
There certainly isn't enough episodes left for Disappearance now, unless they devote all of the next episodes to it and I really doubt that for some reason, which is a really big shame, 'cause I was looking forward to seeing Kyon flip out.
It really doesn't matter what they do with Haruhi now, it's dead, they pounded a thirty page short story into more than half of the freaking season, and no one save for the most shamelessly rabid Haruhi fans are going to buy it when it comes out. I rather wish I hadn't bought the first season at this point, because it has no where to go as far as I see.
i couldnt agree more. it doesnt matter how many good episodes you throw at this anime, this arc is and always will be the achilles heel that brings the series down; right down the drain.
I definitely ain't buying the DVDs, but I'm gonna keep watching. Or should I say, now that Endless Eight has finished, I'm gonna resume watching.
I think there's gonna be good to it, just that err... that's really unforgivable to the point there's no way I'm paying for it.
I would buy the DVD's as well it would be a complete set then wouldn't it
I would buy the series, but I mustadmit that endless eight stuff seemed a waste of time

Does it matter if it's a complete set when the second season stinks so bad? I never got the whole lust for "completing" an entire series when it basically died halfway through. I only buy things if I like them, not just to fill a gap that could be filled by something better.
Only my opinion. :e_wink:
Endless Eight was one of the worst disasters I can recall happening to an anime series in recent memory.
And from a marketing standpoint, my god, what was Kyoto Animation thinking?? Surely they considered the negative implications of doing something like this? O_o With close to nine identical episodes making for a long and monotonous mess, this could rival Amy Winehouse's self-destructive music career. (Sorry, I can't compare it to anything else atm. :il_hahaha: )
Comparing with the first season, I'm thinking season 2 is going to be a hard sell when it hits store shelves in Japan. And when it becomes licensed for release here, you know that Bandai Entertainment is going to be nervous and will need to be creative on how they market it (Limited editions including good quality gashapon figures, decals, t-shirts, and other swag might do the trick if they're lucky).
I'm going to see how the rest of season 2 plays out, but I'm already more than disappointed. Have to wonder if Endless Eight has damaged season 2 beyond repair.
Also..

O_O HOLY F***ING SH*T THAT SCARED ME Don't do that :lordilvryannoyed:
Sighs(current one) isn't so bad, explains how they make the movie(and why the cat can talk etc.) but I seriously would've preferred Disapearance. Guess you won't get what you want with this lot.
At least it gives some hope for the DVDs(I mean Endless Eight repeats will have either a disc of it's own or be completely left out) I guess.
Episode 1 of The Sigh aired this week! I guess KyoAni are going to make the rest of the series be about the SOS brigade making the short film. Thats ok by me. I always wanted to see the 'behinds the scenes footage' if you like.
Quoteand why the cat can talk etc.
They didnt explain that in this episode, but im hoping they do either next week or the week after.
Well Sighs is an entire book to itself, so it should be 4-5 episodes long. Although it could be "crushed" for the sake of all them goddamn Endless Eights.
i loved reading that chapter. It had one of the powerful moments in the series for me, when i think 'this book is so great'.
Spoiler: It was when Haruhi remarked during the day that she wished the pigeons in the scene were white (a reference to a director, i think it was wantanabe soichiro? Correct me if im wrong)and Koizumi decides to take Kyon on one of those nighttime car rides (like Akio Ohtori) where he talks on and on about something profound(Koizumi is the only guy i ever got annoyed at for talking and thinking too much. I generally encourage thinking among teenagers), and he takes Kyon back to the set and finds the pigeon are now white. It had a real impact when i read that.

Bwahahaha...!
Posting unflattering Haruhi pics in protest of the (so far) crappy quality of season 2 makes me feel just a wee bit better. What can I say? :e_tongue:
________
Decided to watch episode 10 today. It felt kind of dragged-on but interesting to see how that short film came to be which they made. Haruhi has mad negotiation skillz when it came to getting a camera and props!
Also I thought Haruhi's hot tea idea was just downright, effed-up evil. :il_hahaha:
That is so adorably trippy. Love it!
Haruhi is a right bitch in these episodes. What is it about this series and the uninteresting characters (kyon), pointless characters (whatshisface who i cant be bothered to remember his name), annoying characters (Haruhi) and the fact nothing world shakingly epic happens. thats all im watching this series for after all. oh i forgot the dullard characters (everyone else apart from Mikuru and Nagato at times)
oh well, im sure it will get good at some point. *speaks spongebob narrator voice* "50 years latair"

As you can probably tell, my disgust for season 2 still lingers like the afterbite of a deer fly.
And poor Yuki has resorted to binge drinking.... *tsk-tsk*
Look what you've done, Kadokawa/Kyo-Ani..
You really did it. You blew it all up!
This list is the correct episode order. The best way to think of it is that series 1 and 2 merged into one. I hope the DVD sets at least state this episode order. They may not, so that's why this list is important.
01) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya I
02) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya II
03) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya III

29) The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (movie)
^lol! Just noticed the update by Lan.
So yeah, Kadokawa/Kyo-Ani is shameless I tell you. Shameless.
Probably old news to some, (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-10-08/disappearance-of-haruhi-suzumiya-film-announced-for-2010) but apparently the "Disappearance" arc which everyone was heavily anticipating to see in season two is going to be released in movie format. (The hell? O_o)
One can infer from such an announcement that Kadokawa/Kyo-Ani is pulling out all the stops for some amount of reconciliation with the now severely POed Haruhi fanbase.
Tentative release of Disappearance is Spring 2010 in Japanese theaters.
After working it out properly, we should get the equivalent of 4 or 5 episodes. This seems about right to me, so in theory, it should be a good movie.
For Kadokawa/Kyo-Ani, Disappearence is going to have to be a good movie. There will be too much on the line with keeping this franchise alive now. This latest production is either going to make it or break it..
.. Or more accurately, win back the once rabid fanbase with a quality production, or utterly destroy the fanbase AND the franchise to complete oblivion by feeding everyone more substandard product. There will surely be no in-betweens, nor second chances considering how poor the season two production was handled and how badly it was received by most.
The question is, can they bring it back?
The pressure is all on them and I hope they feel it big time. This isn't just about saving Haruhi - This is about giving us worthwhile animated entertainment in general.
Well a movie certainly sounds interesting, especially after witnessing the shambles of a second series, that endless eight episode just seemed a waste of time
thats a bit of a long wait though... :elannoyed:
i can imagine alot of people just blowing off the show and moving on with their lives before it comes out, and by then they don't care about seeing it.
You have to remember that Haruhi's case in japan is slightly different. the fan base is mainly formed of those that have read the novel series, and because they already know what the disappearance arc is all about, they will want to see the film. i guess over here you could compare it with the harry potter films. those that have read the book will want to see the film.
however, those that have not read the haruhi novels will probably opt out of seeing the film.

Unfortunately the U.S. is also a huge market for anime, and despite a smaller percentage of Americans (and other nations as well of course) following anime at any level, numerically America tosses in a huge share of the market (I think Carl even commented on this phenomena somewhere before if my memory serves me properly). Much of that market I believe is going to not give a hoot about the film (I know I won't), and it will either die off or simply retreat to a Japanese-release only anime if it manages to stay alive.
When it's released some clever sod will ploink it on the internet for download probably
i wont even bother looking until the dvd is released in japan. im not watching some crappy video quality someone has probably stollen from the cutting room floor, or even some other crappier version that someone was filming through their jumper. no thanks
So..... The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya Movie is due to hit movie theaters of Japan in just a few days.
Some can only wonder this will be the 'make it or break it' for the franchise.
We'll soon see if there's any hope to be had..

The 10th Haruhi light novel is getting a release at last. volume 9 was released 3 years ago.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-02-24/haruhi-new-light-novel-to-be-previewed-in-the-sneaker
I've been waiting for that for a while. I believe the 10th volume finally answeres the question as to what Haruhi actually is. The 9th might have hit on it, but i was too preoccupied with finishing it that actually paying attention. Plus, im no good reading a computer screen.
I also really hope the 10th is the final. I just want to hurry up and get it over and done with. To be honest, the character designs are looking uglier and uglier to me. especially haruhi.
The 10th Haruhi light novel is going to be called "The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya", to be released sometime this year
